As the #olympics get going in earnest this week, not everyone's attention is focused on Paris; surfing heads to French Polynesia. Why? Well apart from the French coast resembling a lake at this time of year, at the end of the road on Tahiti-Iti is a wave unlike any other; Teahupo'o – ‘a place of skulls'. This wave is unique; A trough way below sea level, a massively thick lip plunging forward, with no back to the wave. Why does it do this? It of course comes down to bathymetry. Using new seabed data from SHOM and the Celeris wave model we can look at how the offshore features shape the waves as they approach the break point. **TIDE TABLE FOR MAY 2024 IN SOUTHEND ON SEA 🌊⏰🛥️⛲⚓🛟** Note: Tide times are always an approximation as tides and sea current strength are influenced by the prevailing weather conditions and Moon cycles (Spring and Neap tides). Southend-on-Sea is a tidal flood plain. The tide retreats some 1+ mile offshore and comes back twice each day (approx every 12.5hrs from low tide to low tide), knowing tide times will ensure you are not caught out on the water. Knowing how to find tide information is important if you are planning on visiting the coast whether for the beach with your family or planning to go out onto the water in a vessel or water craft (paddle boarding, kite surfing etc). You can find tide information across a wide spectrum of platforms, including ‘apps’ for your phone which is the easiest way to access tide information at your fingertips or you can call up ’Southend tide times’ on your internet search engine which will provide the same information. Tide times are also published at various points across the Southend seafront (outside Pier & Foreshore offices) and published in local papers. Mwazaro Beach Lodge was once a budget hotel that catered for kite surfers only and they only saw the kite surfing season between Dec - March. It changed ownership two years ago, and the new owners wanted to completely change what MBL was all about. Yes, they still wanted to maintain their Kitesurfer market, but they also made new renovations and wanted to be see as a luxury lodge that catered for couples. They wanted to send out the message that they are more than just kitesurfing. They are the perfect, tranquil getaway. An experience to be had.
