💡 Membership comes before Leadership ⚡ Ever have one of those days where a single line hits you like a bolt of lightning, jolting you back to a profound realization? Last week, I found myself in such a moment, courtesy of a conversation with a remarkably insightful individual. It is a concept often overlooked in the rush towards success, yet one that resonates deeply with the essence of effective leadership, especially when you are acting in Interim Management roles. It's in these informal spaces where the seeds of true leadership are sown. Every now and then I forget and fall into the trap so that I am brought back down to earth. Today's leadership paradigm values vulnerability over directives, authenticity over authority. And it is within the fabric of membership that we cultivate these invaluable qualities, fostering connections, building trust, and embracing our shared humanity. However, there are times when pursuing leadership positions might not be the best course of action. When the informal culture of the leadership team doesn't foster openness or inclusivity, it's crucial to reassess our aspirations. In such instances, recognizing the value of membership becomes even more pivotal, as it allows us to contribute meaningfully while seeking environments that align with our values. Let's remember: leadership it about the journey of growth and connection. “Creating spaces for people to belong and be seen is not only good for the people who belong to those groups, but also the company who encourages and support these groups to exist” (Adapted, Jimena Almendares). The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) employee network groups at William Grant & Sons are doing just that....actively creating spaces of belonging. Recently, I was honoured to be invited to lead and facilitate a 2-day leadership, celebration, and planning workshop event, in which the network co-chairs met in person, to continue to create these belonging spaces in an even more strategic, and comprehensive manner across the organisation. Thank you William Grant & Sons for the opportunity. I was inspired by both the positive and fun energy as well as the high engagement of the co-chairs who were keen to connect, explore, discuss, brainstorm and plan together for the future, both as individual networks and a collective network community. We celebrated the fantastic work the networks have done thus far but also really delved into creating innovative and cohesive planning across the networks and organisation for the future. Lots of interaction and insights shared as well as coaching-based strategies, processes, and tips provided for the co-chairs to consider implementing. In addition, healthy leadership skills were explored to support them to further develop as they proactively lead the networks.
