19th August — World Humanitarian Day. But think with me for a minute. What does this day truly mean in a world torn apart by conflict? The selfless efforts of aid workers are being commemorated, but are we merely paying lip service to an ideal that’s becoming increasingly elusive? Does a single day of recognition have any tangible impact on ongoing global crises? Consider: 1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: The destruction of millions of lives caused by wars, famine, and natural disasters. 2. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁: A lukewarm call-to-action set against a backdrop of humanitarian crises that never seem to end. 3. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Can this day inspire meaningful change, or is it just a hashtag? 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁. Isn’t it time we redefine what World Humanitarian Day means, beyond just likes and shares on social media? #WorldPeace #HumanitarianRights #SocialJustice #Leadership

Finding Humanity in Humanitarian Work | Tim Budge | TEDxMaldon Thirty years of humanitarian work has only taught me how little I know. I don’t have the certainty and focused motivation with which I started, back when I thought I could make a difference to people living in poorer parts of the world. However, what has grown in me is a deepening need to hold onto a sense of shared humanity and to look for that humanity in its unpolished yet hopeful reality in all contexts. In the words of Ernest Hemingway, I am trying to become a better BS detector, to sieve through meaning and layers of information presented by politicians, well-meaning marketing folk, including those in NGOs, and my own crusted-on prejudices that blur the realities of other people’s humanities. What is often under the layers is a heartbreaking jumble of suffering and determination, loss and hope, bitterness and faith, seemingly ever-present in all refugee camps and other emergency contexts. Yet, in all my work, even before October 2023, it is Gaza that breaks my heart beyond any other place. It’s where post-traumatic stress took root in my life, and where I still have a sense of survivor guilt and vicarious suffering. As I see it, this is not about taking sides, it’s about listening to stories and challenging ourselves about the meaning we superimpose on other cultures, religions, people and histories. It’s about being unequivocal in holding on to shared humanity and letting hope guide us all to something better than what we have. https://lnkd.in/dXSTa6pV

🌍 📸 Climate Photo of the Week 🌧️🛑 The reality of #climatechange hits home in #Kakuma Refugee Camp, #Kenya. Recently, heavy rains have destroyed one of the crucial bridges linking Kakuma 1 & 2, creating a challenging situation for refugees who rely on it for essential movement of people and goods. 🌍💪 Sustainable climate actions are urgently needed to prevent such disasters and protect vulnerable communities. #Water for #Peace #World #Water #Day #2024 #Could we really #ًWill Be #ready for this?! اليوم العالمي #للمياه 2024 المياه لأجل #السلام# في يوم المرأة وفي يوم المياه وفي يوم السلام .. يبقى السؤال اين كل هذه المبادئ الدولية والايام العالمية من غزة ونساؤها وسلامها #Water can create #peace or #spark conflict. When #water is #scarce or #polluted, or when #people have #unequal or #no access, #tensions can rise. #Safeguarding water, #food and #energy security through #sustainable #water management, #providing water #supply and #sanitation services to all, #supporting human health and livelihoods, #mitigating the impacts of #climate change and #extreme events and #sustaining and #restoring #ecosystems and the #valuable services they provide, are all #pieces of a great and #complex #puzzle. Only through #partnerships and #cooperation can the #pieces come #together. And #everyone has a #role to #play. #Water often plays a role in conflict: #Water can be a trigger when interests of different water users, including States and provinces, clash and are perceived as irreconcilable, or when water quantity and/or quality decreases, which may affect human- and ecosystem health. #Water can be a weapon during armed conflict – used by both State and non-State actors – as a means to gain or maintain control over territory and populations or as a means to pressurize opponent groups. #Water can be a casualty of conflict when water resources, water systems or utility employees are intentional or incidental casualties or targets of violence. Attacks on civilian infrastructure, including water systems, pose serious health risks and violate international humanitarian law. On #women's day, #water day, and #Peace Day. The #question remains where all #these international #principles and the #international days of Gaza and its #women and #peace.???!!
