"The 911 Emergency Response System is the public’s first point of contact in most emergency situations. This vital public system depends on the presence of trained professionals who respond to emergency calls." If you are in an executive staff position or city official, do you understand the challenges your 911 Emergency Communications Center faces in maintaining an adequate workforce? "Because they work out of sight and are contacted rarely by most individuals, they tend to be taken for granted by officials at all levels of government. Recognition and honors are common for police, fire, and EMS field responders, but not so much for 911 professionals. They are truly the unsung heroes of public safety. Agencies simply must find long-term solutions to the 911 staffing problem if they are to serve the public well." When discussing public safety staffing challenges and solutions, is 911 Emergency Communications part of the discussion? "Federal and state occupational statistics compound the problem. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies 911-related jobs as “Office and Administrative Support Occupations,” not “Protective Service Occupations.” With all due respect to office workers, this misclassification of 911 workers fails to recognize their crucial role in public safety; the highly specialized training and skills they must acquire and use daily; and the uniquely complex, stressful work environments in which they serve. Giving 911 professionals the respect and support they deserve will help improve employee retention and ultimately benefit callers in crisis."

It is imperative to stress the importance of immediately reporting accidents to employees in every workspace. Some accidents may not seem "that bad" at first, leading employees to delay reporting injuries or pain they don't feel until much later. In Nevada, workplace injuries need to be immediately reported, or employees may not receive workers compensation. You can ensure proper reporting by frequently reminding employees of BBSI's Nurse Triage Hotline, which they can call to receive medical advice and directions on where to go for treatment. Helping Executives Operationalize Workplace Violence Prevention. 🔸Healthcare Workforce Safety and Sustainability - Operational Efficiency and Quality Consultant | Keynote Speaker | Author | Recovering ICU Nurse |🔸
PSA: listen to your security directors!!! If you are using a de escalation training program whose physical techniques are not preferred or used in other countries it’s because they are dangerous. And they can kill someone. No amount of training can correct a bad technique. Please, as a nurse who has taken oath to do no harm, look at all the elements of a physical tactics program. I have spent the last 10 years taking all of them (more than once) and reviewing ones that have just come out! Just because someone is teaching something does not mean it’s best practice! You can have a shitty roofer do your house and have leaks! It’s the same concept. NOT ALL PHYSICAL TACTICS ARE SAFE. But Mel, I’m not in security, how will I know? Here’s how; - They are still teaching pressure points- proven by research to be ineffective in psych and substance abuse (fyi that’s all your violent patients.) - They are placing people prone (face down) on the floor with BOTH arms controled in the back (it causes asphyxiation and pulmonary/cardiac stress) better choice is side lying or leg control and one arm. - they have someone using a two hand technique for head control. (2 hand Pressure on the head, neck or any area there is never acceptable. It takes very little force to control the head and neck when done correctly and when done with technique it can be done with one hand/arm only.) Reach out before you spend millions for training that’s going to maybe one day cost you millions in a lawsuit or worse, cause severe patient harm. Patient care is not policing folks. For expert advice please contact my good friend Doug Melia . He’s one of the best in use of force and is actually coming to the US in January! Make sure you connect with him while he’s here!
