I recently added an article to the ongoing conversation about supporting the safety and confidence of our security professionals. This topic is critical and multi-faceted, and I wanted to share my insights and observations from my unique perspective. Hopefully, there is something of value for some of you with it. #security #securityindustry #securityprofessional #securityprofessionals #securitytraining #securitymanagement #securitymanager #securityservices #securityservice #propertymanagement #propertymanagers #crisismanagement #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #safety #safetyfirst #safetyawareness #securityguard #securityguards

This course is so important, the role of the supervisor/team leader is often underestimated. Which was a topic discussed in the recent NEBOSH Online Health and Safety Conference. Interestingly, this is not just a health and safety course, but actually helps people to be a good team leader.
If you work in the construction industry, this is your sign to head in to the new year with brand new leadership skills, by signing up for the ECITB's CCNSG Leading a Team Safely qualification. This one-day course builds on knowledge from the CCNSG Safety Passport course to help develop your understanding of health and safety leadership, and you can even become qualified before Christmas by securing your place on our 30th November course. I knew very little about the safety program when I got hired but she took a chance on me. On day one, I had a ton of material to read. On day two I was taken on rounds through the entire hospital. Day three I had to sit through every single meeting and become familiar with the teams. Day four... more reading material. Day five: more meetings. Day six I began coordinating a project with the director of the ER & I had to lead an employee volunteer safety program, alone, on day seven! Two months later my boss took a leave of absence and it was time for the mock disaster. To say I was scared was an understatement. BUT I HAD BEEN MENTORED! Knowing that she trusted me, understanding that I had the support of several teams, and that I had been prepared for this -- I responded. Thankfully, the crashed plane that would fill our emergency department and overwhelm our facility was a test but, as interim Safety Director, I got a pat on the back and kudos from my director & our leadership, and I owed the success of the coordination and execution to her mentorship. She saw potential in me and gave me real, valuable, and important work, that I wanted to learn and do well. She never made me feel inadequate, instead she explained anything I didn't understand, proudly introduced me to everyone, and wanted me to be visible. When she gave her notice less than three years later I told her that I'd be lost without her. I mean the facility as a whole would be lost without her. She wasn't worried, she said. In fact, she told me that she knew I could handle it and should apply for HER job. She was invested in everyone she worked with, and her passion is what made her a true leader. That was one of the best experiences of my career and the experience I hope to help doctors build in their own practices. Have you worked for a leader like this? I wanna hear stories! 👇🏾 #excellentleaders #womeninleadership #staffengagement #harmonypartnerships

Sometimes, good leadership means someone else may be the best choice to lead... I recently met a friend and colleague, Frank Aff, for a smoothie. We sat outside to enjoy the spring sun as we chatted. We then noticed something unusual occurring on the sidewalk near us. A man was helping a woman who appeared to have fallen from her walker, which was nearby. However, we soon realized the woman wasn't getting up and walked over to the man to ask if he needed help. He did, and we discovered the woman was not responsive. Moreover, he didn't know the woman, as I had incorrectly assumed. A call was placed to 911 (nice job, Frank!) and the dispatcher on the line directed for chest compressions until help could arrive. Fortunately, a fourth man who had arrived on the scene had just completed a First Aid/CPR course just a few days prior! He administered the compressions, and first responders appeared shortly to take over. As leaders, we naturally want to lead. Take charge in a situation and be the person out front. But we're not always the best option to do so. Although I'm confident either Frank or I would have performed CPR if needed, unquestionably the best man for the job was the one who had been recently trained to do so. For us to insist otherwise would have been foolish. Of course, most decisions we make do not have potentially life or death ramifications. This experience serves as a powerful reminder to consider our choices when making certain kinds of decisions. Sometimes, you are the top option to lead a project or assignment. And sometimes, someone else is the best choice. For those times when it's another person, step gracefully (or quickly!) aside and make room for that individual to go to work. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #leadershipfirst #careers #careerdevelopment #business #principals #careerstrategy
