It's extremely frustrating going through the job search, application process, only to be emailed and called by Identity Theft scammers. We're supposed to trust the application process, from all of these companies that have their own web site portals, and then the scammers make their own portals, to gather your information to phish and hack your accounts and life. The worst part is, LinkedIn and Indeed seem to not be doing anything about it. So if you're applying online for jobs, and you get any kind of feedback from potential employers, be certain to do your due diligence, and research any and every contact that comes back to you. Moreover, in the web portals, when applying, never put in your driver's license and/or social security numbers. These identifiers are only to be given to the employer that actually hires you, and only after they hire you.

When talking with "recruiters" everyone needs to be careful. As many have also spoken about scams or identity theft I literally ran into a new one. A "recruiter" recently reached out to me about a potential role. Role sounded good so showed interest. Spoke with this person, not to mention no LinkedIn picture, and got some more info. Role was sounding better and better. They send me an email with instructions to "create a profile" on the platform for their "talent pool". As this all sounds odd I go check me email. I noticed in the email the username had my Gmail as the username but instead of "@gmail.com" it has "@googlemail.com" so there is a giant red flag. I put in the username and the generated password. On the "create new password page" I made sure to create a super unique password as well. The next page is where the line was drawn and the red lights flashed so hard. Within the next page was a "agreement" where this company wanted me to waive basically all my rights and claims for the future. Immediately exited the site and now doing a full system scan for Malware/Viruses. Went over and did a Google search to find 10 open legal cases against this specific company. All dealing with "Salary Withholdings", "Force Labor/Unpaid Work" and "Previous Employment to be Recalled". Within this agreement there was also a clause of "Waiving your right to Jury Duty..." but from what I gathered this company was making people sign away their lives to the company and even after separation the company could recall you at any moment. Please everyone read any agreement before just blindly agreeing. No job is worth signing your life away. #redflag #awareness #scam

#OpenToWork 2023 Electrical Engineering/Computer Science graduate looking for a job in control systems, engineer drafting, software dev or data science, ready to work in the Philly area or with relocation assistance
Hello, everyone! I'm back from a few days of applying to a job to find out it was a scam. So here are my tips if you find anything like this. Mind you, just because there are red flags, it doesn't mean that it's a scam, but in my case it was. 1. When someone emails you from a domain, don't just Google the company name because they often use names of real companies, but rather go to that domain preferably with JavaScript off in case the website has malware and judge for yourself if it's real. If I had done this from day 1, I would have saved myself some time. But here are some early red flags I caught on in order of biggest to smallest. 2. The role was vague, a generic "software engineer" role. No details on technologies used, or what the product is. 3. Very little to no contact information. In my case, the recruiter didn't even sign their names in the email. I knew his name because he introduced himself in the first email. He also would not tell me how interviews were conducted until just before the interview. 4. Badgering. You get multiple emails a day if you miss one. This is a sales technique called "sense of urgency": The idea is to get you to buy the product now because it won't be available later. 5. The job took way too quickly to decide that they wanted me, about 2 days of interviewing with no business days between steps. 6. Too high an offer. I got offered about a $160,000 salary for an entry position. That's possible, but I don't have enough details about the position to determine if it's reasonable. The last thing was that he asked for my address, which is where I stopped responding. This for me is always a sign that something is wrong. It could be used for identity theft or harassment. My previous experience is that jobs will only ask you for your address on your I9s and W2s. If someone is asking for your personal information, you have to be 100% sure they are who they say they are. I hope this helps someone.
