I recently stepped onto a construction site for the first time and it was a hilarious adventure! 🤣🏗️ I've never seen so many hard hats, tool belts, and mud puddles in one place! The construction team was working hard, but they still managed to crack jokes and make me laugh. I even tried to operate a jackhammer (let's just say it didn't end well 🤦♀️). As I walked through the site, I saw a sign that said "Caution: Construction Zone" 🚧😂. I thought it was a warning, but then I saw a worker doing a funny dance to avoid a low-hanging beam! Okay, maybe that didn't happen, but it was still a funny sight to see. The construction team's sense of humor and camaraderie made the experience even more enjoyable. My first construction experience taught me that even in unexpected places, you can find humor and joy 😂. The construction team's ability to laugh and have fun while working hard was inspiring, and I was reminded that a positive attitude can make any situation more enjoyable. Who knows what other funny moments construction has in store? 🤣🏗️ #ConstructionLife #FirstTime #FunnyMoments #ConstructionHumor #HardHatLife #ToolBeltTales #MudPuddleAdventures #ConstructionZone #LaughAndLearn #ConstructionTour #Building Memories #SustainableBuilding #ConstructionFun

Millwork Carpenter | Field Leadership Coaching | Fighter for the Skilled Trades | People-First & Technology-Second Approach
Over and over again for twenty-five years, I've seen the finger pointed at the skilled trades in the field. Rather than take responsibility for errors, mistakes, or oversites. Like gunfighters, the office or trailer 'quick draw' that pointer finger and start pointing away. Lazy, stupid, incompetent, they say. "They just don't care" At times this may be the case, but if it is it is indicative of a much greater problem. I have worked with elite crews, the best of the best, at times we could not hit the estimated hours. We were experienced, efficient, and skilled but despite our best efforts, we could not hit the estimated numbers. We often joked that for our entire careers, we had never been on a project that made money, because that was all we had ever heard. I will confess that one of the big reasons that I was in the field all of last week was an estimation mistake. I severely underestimated the time it would take to install a couple of millwork elevations. It was the first project that I had estimated and our first bid with this manufacturer. Even if this is a valid excuse, the consequences were the same. I have the skills so I took it upon myself to install the bulk of these elevations. The manufacturer PM jokingly called it my "white whale". Like Captain Ahab I put my head down and did what I needed to do. Not compromising my standards or our company's standards, I saw it through. It was my mistake, but a valuable mistake, a lesson learned. Until we bridge the chasm between the field and the office this will only continue to get worse. I have worked on both sides and the misconceptions go both ways. There is one certainty. The better that we collaborate the better we can be. #construction #lead #leadership #skilledtrades #trades #PM #superintendent #blucollar #millwork

Today kicked off #ConstructionSafetyWeek! Today's topic is all about driving personal ownership. It’s important that every one of us accepts a greater level of responsibility for our own safety and the safety of others. When it comes to safety, whether it be an unsafe condition or behavior, if you see it, you own it, if you walk by it, you condone it. Check out this great video for more on today's topic: https://lnkd.in/eHNMGnVB #construction #constructionindustry #constructionnews #constructionnetworking #constructionsafety

Trust. It pretty much all boils down to trust, doesn’t it? Take this character. He was installing exterior balcony doors last week, a job that involves important details for waterproofing and air sealing. The balconies don’t have railings yet so anyone stepping onto a balcony must be tied off. That’s not a safety rule I made up, that’s an OSHA regulation. An actual law we have to abide by when we think about it. This guy went to the effort of putting on his harness and dragging a lifeline around but wasn’t taking ten seconds to tie it off to the framing. I mean, come on, that’s not even THREE seconds of effort with the equipment he was wearing and the site conditions involved. Not because he didn’t know better. Not because he wasn’t trained on how to use the gear correctly. I’d like to say it was because he was lazy, but it took more effort trying to be sneaky than it would have to just clip the rope. He was trying to put one over on me. I guess he figured that I’d see his rope from outside and wouldn’t know he wasn’t actually tied off. Here’s the thing: Obviously this is a stupid safety violation, and there were consequences for him, his employer, the subcontractor who hired that crew… and by extension for me and my project schedule. What REALLY happened here, though, is that these guys broke my trust. If they’re trying to sneak this past me, what else are they trying to get away with? What details are they skimping on with the installation? Did they really run three continuous lines of sealant under the threshold? Did they really seal the corners of the rough openings correctly? How you do anything is how you do everything, isn’t that how the saying goes? I maintain that trust has to first be given. Not earned. Given. Once broken, though, it’s very difficult to fix. Like gluing together that cracked ceramic cup; Might be serviceable but there’s always that line, the permanent scar we can’t quite hide. We can’t cover up that reminder it’s been broken. Trust but verify… Lot of truth to that. For me, I’ll be verifying a whole lotta door installs this week.

I've been known for the odd "what's wrong with this picture" post. Well - What's wrong with this picture? The full photo was showcasing a group of individuals who had apparently toured a construction project. I don't know if everyone depicted in the photo took part in the tour - but in the full image they were all standing right in front of the building under construction. I would encourage anyone posting a photo/video, on any platform or in marketing materials to promote safe work practices. I can't believe how many roofing contractor's displays I've seen at home shows that have images with their workers exposed to fall hazards. #safetyfirst #prevention #safety
