DON'T build a business that needs capital, build a business that capital NEEDS. This is the biggest learning for me from the last couple years of being a founder. Like many naive founders, we wen't chasing venture capital from the outset. With no tangible proof points to speak of, this was such a waste of time. The right to raise MUST be earned. So, we stopped fundraising to focus on building a business that can sustain itself and we picked up a few great angels along the way. We got tired of chasing investors. So instead, we'll let our unrelenting forward momentum leave investors chasing us (we send an update to a list of highly targeted investors EVERY MONTH). They might not chase us at first, but it doesn't matter. Until they do, we'll have a sustainable business that doesn't need their capital. I WISH we took this approach from day 1️⃣ Hindsight eh 🤷♂️
"Build a business that can sustain itself" 💥 Simple, not easy but a great guiding principle and one we totally get behind. If you read nothing else today and just take a few minutes to think abut this for your business, that's time well spent. Thanks Scott!
This is so true Scott! There are so many founders on the VC treadmill not realizing they are slipping with the key metrics that make their business viable due to their focus on getting another financing round... that's why I am a huge fan of bootstrapping ;)
Such a great post Scott Ashmore the funding trap is real! Love your mindset shift and appreciate your transparency in sharing your story. Would love to catch up on how you're progressing since we last spoke
Oh yes. Liking this!

7moThis is a shift I've also made, Scott. Coming from a world where I worked with more than a hundred founders who raised millions, I realised I was trying to build something to convince investors and prove the business can attract money instead of building something for my founder-self. I haven't gone to market actively since then and like you, I have got some amazing angels who enabled us to move forward and my focus is completely on revenue generation. Capital will come later if and when needed.
