✅ Recently a client landed a new job but what we worked on was the use of JOB TITLES. The previous employer had a CREATIVE name but this was not clear what the job seeker did. We reviewed titles more commonly used in the industry to target companies looking for this role. As a different example, Project Manager is now used in many ways. This PM role could be in technology, construction, or marketing. So it's important to clarify in all your documents both written and digital what you offer.   ➛ Project Manager in Commercial Construction  Able to complete projects within a set budget and mitigate on-site challenges. ************************** So, this client changed the vague title on LinkedIn and other documents. This helped in finding the roles to match what they did and are looking to do. This small modification did not mean it was easy to find a new position, but that it was more effective than the previous company title. #resume #jobseekers #careeradvice

Think about how you could use that extra time if you worked closer to home or remotely. More time for hobbies, family, exercise, or just relaxing. 2. Including achievements on your resume can be a great way to show the value you’ve created for your employers, but don’t include things like complied with all safety policies, improved client satisfaction levels, or planned shutdowns etc. Those are duties/tasks; not quantifiable achievements. If you’re going to list an achievement then it should include an actual situation/task, actions you took, and the results you achieved. An example for a Project Manager might be something along the lines of “mitigated slippage in schedule by identifying tasks on the critical path and re-allocating resources from non-critical tasks to long duration tasks, which resulted in getting the schedule back on track.” Situation = schedule slippage; Action = identifying critical path and re-allocating resources onto long duration tasks; and result = schedule back on track.

One thing I will never understand is how people get hired or promoted in the construction industry to project managers or higher at general contractors with no or very limited knowledge on the types of products that can be used. Having experience and or knowledge of construction practices should be a prerequisite to project management and above.

Soft skills set candidates apart. There’s a lot of superintendents out there that have built incredible projects and have the hard skills necessary. But only a fraction of them have the soft skills our clients are looking for and pay us to find. This isn’t just superintendents though - it’s project managers, estimators, project engineers, and other construction professionals. Hard skills can help get someones foot in the door, but it always comes down to soft skills for whether or not they get let in. #groundupconstructionrecruiting #construction #hiring #softskills

Is being a Project Manager always the end goal? As a #Construction Management recruiter, it seems like "being a PM one day" is the holy grail. 🏆 While being a PM seems to have its perks, I DON'T think it is the most strategic option for every Construction Management grad. Here are some pros and cons I've noticed in some of the most typical Construction Management careers: Project Management Pros: 👨💼 Prestigious title (to some...if that means anything to you) 💰 Highest bonus potential across companies Cons: 🤔 Most crowded of the core verticals, meaning the competition to be a great PM at a great firm is getting stiffer Superintendent Pros: 📈 There are SO MANY opportunities for sophisticated and responsible Field Managers in the future. It's HARD to find a great Superintendent with a decade (or more!) of experience, and it will be harder in the next ten years. 💸 The market is driving the pay for Supers up. 🏗 You get to be ON THE PROJECT! Cons: 😑 Life is less predictable, and work-life balance is a moving target 🛩 Traveling out of town for that one-off project means extended time away from home 🏋♂️ The physical demands of being in the Field are no joke Estimator Pros: 🛣 There are ALWAYS opportunities for good estimators 👱♂️ This role seems to have the most career longevity Cons: ➕Takeoffs 😟 Stress of bid days or client presentations 🖥 It's the most tied-to-a-desk role Obviously, there are a lot of considerations when approaching any career, but it seems CM grads are generally set on Project Management. I believe there is a lot more to consider. LinkedIn likes to limit my ramblings, but next week I'll post more about some of the pros and cons in some of the less popular routes for Construction Managers. Until then, have a great weekend!
