Successful downtowns have lots of people living in them. They are neighbourhoods unto themselves. Those who travel downtown for work or are visitors are just gravy. It's good to see Windsor investing in its downtown. There was a time when it was an attractive arts and cultural hub, until there were a few decades of bad planning and community investment decisions. It can be attractive again, however, its revitalization will not just come from increased policing, but from investing in and approving more housing so that more people can live and enjoy it. https://buff.ly/4b5uIjq

At Toronto and East York Community Council I got to illustrate the interconnected relationship between public transportation and biking by deputing in support of prioritizing the curb lane for public and active transportation while commuting on Metrolinx GO train service. #NewTowns appearing left right and centre in party in #political talk that these will quickly resolve the #Housingcrisis. It is worth looking at what #history tells us about the delivery of #homes within #NewTowns. I kicked off with #MiltonKeynes earlier in the week, it was the first one everyone thinks of, however its delivery was under the #NewTownsAct1965 of greater importance was the #NewTownsAct1946 enacted 1yr after the second #worldwar with the country in a #Housingcrisis. The Act established an ambitious goal of delivering 10 by 1955. It gave the power to designate land for #development and set up #developmentcorporations' (DC). #Stevenage, in #Hertfordshire was the 1st, from its conception envisaged the existing #historictown being at its ‘core’ providing the local facilities new residents required. It was far from popular with existing #residents who staged protests & meetings, one of which was attended by the #MinisterofTownandCountryPlanning #LewisSilkin who told the 3000 gathered protesters "It's no good your jeering, it's going to be done." 1946. The #Historic #countrytown with a population of 6700 was chosen. And the #StevenageDC formed, designating 2,456ha of land with a target population of 60,000. 1946 to 1950. A period of local opposition, excessive government interference and clumsy management, with two #StevenageDC chairs departing. 1951, very few #housing completions. 1951. New DC Chair appointed and work at last got underway with a start on building the #NewTown and the 1st occupations in Broadview Rd. (to the Southeast of the Old Town) taking place. 1952. Saw the completion of 1,070 #newhomes and another 2,367 under #construction. 1952 -1955. During this period newcomers came from #London an important group in the early years were #constructionworkers. Those on London #councilhouse waiting lists prepared to #work on the #NewTown for at least six months were granted a #DC #house. Of the first 2000 houses completed, over a quarter went to #builders families. Many of the #workers went on to become prominent in the #NewTowns #ResidentsAssociations #leadership and #TownCouncil. 1959 The Old Town #HighStreet is the 1st purpose-built traffic-free shopping zone in #Britain. The strategy of providing #homes for new #residents who took work in #Stevenedge continued however as less new employment became available the #housebuilding rate slowed. 1962. Completions rose to 12,377 of which 12,200 (1,109pa) had been built by the DC, the population had risen to over 35,000. 1962 – 1979. Rate of build fell in this period, though by 1978, job-related categories accounted for 74% of all housing allocations. 1979 Just over 20,000 homes had been built (7,800 in the period 458pa) and #population had reached 75,000. 1980. #StevenageDC wound up. There were mixed voices to whether the ‘project had been a success or not, particularly #design #highways #communityliving #labourrelationships #councilhousing #maintenancecosts etc.
