🌍 Exploring the Big Questions: A Weekly Dive into Topics that Shape Our World 🌱 As Head of Communications at #BerlinCosmopolitanSchool and former journalist I am constantly drawn to the stories, ideas, and trends that define our time. This year, I’m starting a series of weekly reflections on issues that are curious, critical, and culturally relevant—sparking conversations among educators, parents, journalists, politicians, and globally minded individuals who are committed to creating a better society and shaping a more sustainable future for the planet we all share. 🎆 The Fiery Debate: Should Fireworks Be a Thing of the Past? 🚫 Let’s start with a timely question: Should private fireworks be banned? This New Year’s Eve in Berlin was marked not only by celebratory fireworks but also by their destructive consequences—injuries, fires, and environmental damage. This year, Berlin emergency services responded to 1,892 incidents—294 more than the previous year, with some emergency workers even facing attacks during the festivities. While fireworks have long been a symbol of celebration, their impact on public safety, air quality, and wildlife is undeniable. In Germany, approximately 2,050 tons of fine particulate matter (PM₁₀) are released annually through fireworks, with the majority occurring during the New Year's celebrations. This surge leads to some of the highest levels of air pollution recorded throughout the year.  Moreover, the sudden noise and light from fireworks can cause distress to wildlife and domestic animals, disrupting ecosystems and leading to potential long-term effects on animal behaviour. Cities like Paris have begun to reimagine these traditions by implementing spectacular public displays that prioritize safety and environmental considerations.
