Corneal cross-linking in children. The first 3 major studies on the topic were published back in 2012. We were the ones that recommended immediate CXL in children and adolescents with keratoconus, because we observed a natural progression rate of 88% in the age group between 6 and 19 years. 🤰🏿 O’laysha Davis, anticipating her due date, switched doctors due to pressure to deliver at a small community hospital. Concerned about higher health risks for Black women and infants, she declined medication for high blood pressure, citing fluctuating readings between home and the hospital - something commonly referred to as white coat hypertension. 🏥 Despite fears of inducing labor early, her medical team scheduled it only to be met with confusion about hospital bed availability on the day of the induction. Losing trust, Davis sought a midwife, who connected her with a doula and arranged an appointment at another birthing hospital. She successfully avoided induction, laboring at home, and gave birth to her baby, Journee Divine, on August 31, near her due date, at the Medical University of South Carolina. Unfortunately, Davis’ story is not an uncommon one. 🛑 The mistreatment of Black pregnant women and infants in the South traces back to unethical experiments on enslaved Black women in the 1840s. Despite the passing of time, systemic discrimination and limited access to healthcare continue to perpetuate disparities in healthcare for Black women and babies in the United States. 🌍 The situation is particularly dire in Southern states, where infant mortality rates in rural areas, especially for Black babies, resemble those in much poorer parts of the world. 🔄 The intersection of poverty and structural racism in healthcare is identified as a major cause of the disproportionately high mortality rates among Black women and infants. 🗓️ JOIN US for our Legislative Day of Action on 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, and be a part of the movement to advocate for policies that ensure medical professionals receive training in unconscious bias. At the end of 2023, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) held a State of the Science of Pediatric Palliative Care Conference which focused on supporting and improving care for the estimated 74,000 children are living with serious illness in the United States. One of the most pressing issues discussed was supporting parents, families, and caregivers of these children. Empowering autonomy for these people is paramount and Thanacare can help do that. I'm thrilled to see a bill in Louisiana pushed forward by State Rep. Echols requiring Medicaid to cover home visits for newborns. Louisiana's infant and maternal health outcomes are among the worst in the country and, currently, the state's programs designed to decrease infant and maternal mortality rates reach only 10% of newborns on Medicaid, according to the Louisiana Policy Institute for Children. Data from a research review published in Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, a project led by Dr. Heard-Garris, found that the strongest disparities between whites and children of color involved pain management; kids of color are less likely than their white peers to get painkillers for a broken arm or leg, for appendicitis or for migraines.
