Shane Miller, M.D., FAAP, pediatric sports medicine physician at Scottish Rite, joined the crew on Good Day Fox 4 to share summer camp safety tips. Miller used his expertise to explain what parents should look out for when sending their children to camp. From making sure children are getting enough water and rest breaks to learning what the plan is in the event of an injury, Dr. Miller has all the answers. A lot of parents are still in the throes of trying to keep their children busy and engaged over the summer. And for a lot of them, it might mean sending your child to camp. And for some that can be nerve wracking. Joining us this morning, Doctor Shane Miller with Scottish Rite for Children. Good morning to you. Good morning. So I want to get into safety and some of the questions that parents might want to ask. But First off, camp over the summer can provide a lot of benefits to kids other than just them having fun. Camp can be a lot of fun. But beyond the other benefits of. Physical activity, getting kids outdoors and more engaged with the environment, it can really has been shown to improve self esteem, leadership, independence, teamwork and, and can have them try new things, the willingness to try new things. But there are some things that we can do to make sure they have a great camp experience. And when parents drop their kids off to camp, what are some of the questions that they need to ask? You know, overall camp is very safe. It's a very safe experience and there's some things we can do to help keep it that way. Alright, you wanna know, does the camp have a plan, a written plan in place to respond to emergencies, What type of medical training and do that does the staff have, Is it counselors with basic first aid training? Is there a camp nurse there or will they rely on emergency medical services? You also want to communicate with the camp you're any medical issues that your child may have, whether that's allergies, asthma, certainly any medications that they may take, just as you would with the child's school, you want to communicate that up front and find out at what point do I get? Cost the parent if something happens, exactly how do you communicate with us if something has happened either to my child or to the camp and natural disaster or something else? And it may seem kind of basic, you would think it would be obvious in Texas in summer, but you want to ask about hydration and how often the kids are going to have access to water and all that. Any activity that we're going to be doing in Texas in the summer, heat has risks and heat and it comes with heat illness and hydration is super important for that. Water is going to be our go to children. Gonna be having fun throughout the day and they may not stop to drink water. So we need to have scheduled rest breaks, 15 to 20 minutes or so and really encourage them. The counselors and staff need to remind them. So maybe carrying a water bottle, but having free access to water throughout the day is going to be important for them. So you deal with kids all the time. If a parent has a kid, a child that might be reluctant. What are some of the things that you would kind of suggest for parents? Well, you know, you want to encourage children to, to get involved and do some of these things and these are great opportunities. To do so, this is also a good time to touch base with your pediatrician and maybe have your sports physical done for the school year. It's good for the school year, but you can also run by and touch base with your Doctor Who knows your child really well. And then apparent might also want to ask about food, what is provided, what isn't exactly you and I were talking about. Some of these camps are day camps where you may be bringing your own snacks and lunch, or it may be an overnight camp where that's provided for you. And so you can certainly bring nutritional snacks That may depend on whether you have access to a cooler or something to keep cool. Trail mix, granola bars, dried fruit, fresh fruits are all great. Peanut butter and crackers. If there's not peanut allergies, you always have to think about other campers as well. But you can take a lot of great nutritious snacks that are going to give them fuel for the day. All right, Doctor Shane Miller was Scottish Rite for Children. Appreciate your time this morning. I've come a long way after making a 10-fold medication error in 2005 (something I kept to myself for a long time). Now, almost 20 years later, and with 15 years of helping others avoid the same mistakes, I recognize what it really takes to treat the critical pediatric patient. It won't happen with a spreadsheet. It won't happen by downloading an app on your phone. It won't even happen by taking a PALS class every 2 years. It takes a commitment by the organization, from top to bottom, and from the bottom up. If the EMS Chief tries to force it, it won't work If the medic doesn't believe in it, it won't work. If you are just checking boxes, it definitely won't work. Here's what it takes: 1. Leadership that recognizes how hard it is to dose medications, both for kids and adults. 2. The commitment to address the issue. 3. A dosing system that is 100% customized to the agency protocols. 4. EMS specific education that focuses not just on protocol knowledge, but also on how to speak to families, assess children, and administer medications. 5. Continuous quality improvement to evaluate the process on an ongoing basis. The recently released National Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project (PPRP) does a great job helping EMS organizations evaluate their level of readiness. See the video below for more information on this. It takes a village to ensure that our patients are safe, and we need to all join hands and help each other out, because.... When a child comes back to life, it's all worth it. When you prevent an overdose (like I made) it's all worth it. When your crews feel pride after running a difficult pediatric call, it's all worth it. We are ALL IN on helping those who want to see this change happen.
