You Belong is an initiative launched by REFORM Alliance to champion Second Chance Month. #YouBelong is also meant to affirm that giving second chances is a true collective effort. Everyone, from employers to service providers, has a role to play in ensuring this nation is a nation of second chances. We believe everyone deserves a chance to build a fulfilling life, regardless of their worst mistake. Data shows that access to jobs for returning citizens reduces recidivism by over 50%. But the unemployment rate for returning citizens surpasses the national rate at the height of the Great Depression. When returning citizens have access to meaningful employment, they're better equipped to build stable lives, contribute positively to society, and break the cycle of recidivism. Nationwide, nearly 44% of people released from prison end up returning in less than a year. It's a shocking number, but it doesn't have to be this way. We need to start talking about #MentalHealth and #JobHunting. When you lose a family member to suicide, you realize it is not a joke. There is a group of us being left behind with no real reasons as to why. This has been on my mind a lot lately. Why are journalists good enough to give your business free publicity, promote your nonprofit program, or cover your innovative city initiative for the local newspaper, but they lack the skills to get hired in another profession? Many newspaper reporters move to small communities. They leave their family, friends, and network behind. Have you ever wondered how the former newspaper reporter in your community is paying their bills? Why don't you ask sometime. Last month, The Career Pathways team visited our partners at Apna Ghar, Inc. (Our Home), a gender violence organization. WE’s Senior Career Pathways Manager, Tara D. Driver, M.A., LPC, PEL & Programs and Research Coordinator, Efrata Sasahulih, M.A. observed their class session & answered participants’ questions. Career Foundations is Women Employed’s career exploration course designed to help develop a career pathway plan leading to sustainable careers . WE also created a version of Career Foundations to address the challenges & barriers that crisis populations face when trying to navigate workforce services, based on our Intersecting Barriers: Challenges to Economic Empowerment for Domestic Violence Survivors report. Released in 2022, the report sought to better understand the barriers to economic independence by gathering the insights of survivors, domestic violence advocates & workforce development professionals representing 23 Chicagoland organizations.   Read more of our Intersecting Barriers Report here: https://ow.ly/uhtK50R0F3C
