Earlier this month I had the pleasure of running School of Critical Design Speculative Design Masterclasses as the final module in University of Amsterdam's professional courses on Future of Strategy and Future Transitions. Participants were professionals from both public and private sectors, and this time we focused on the "Future of Education." Using speculative design methods, we stepped away from everyday constraints to explore various future scenarios. A striking insight from our sessions was that in all the futures explored, the classroom and, to a large extent, a national education system, were absent from the speculative designs. This led to rich discussions about how future-ready we are today. We reflected on how Speculative Design adds strategic value by: 💫 Loosening our grip on reality to envision new possibilities (not always good ones!) 💫 Creating deeper moments of connection by surfacing very human fears and personal challenges 💫 Encouraging methodical exploration of consequences, without reverting to quick-fix solutions (participants love the futures wheel for this) 💫 Opening up a creative space where your strategic research, data and expertise can be brought to life and implications 'played out' It’s great to see speculative design play a role in these expansive and expert curriculums. It's a wrap...we just finished the 'Lighting Design Awareness' (LDA) course tonight. It was a compressed version of my original effort, which makes it a little more demanding to learn. But, the participants all greatly valued the content provided. In fact, one participant said that nothing like this was covered in the ILLI training. I took this as a great compliment in that we (ELLI) dig deeper than almost any other program out there. The LDA course is a foundational Design-series course we offer, as it sets the tone for much greater learning. ELLI believes that Design is a key element in one's success and/or real advancement in this art form. Not many effectively teach design, especially from a compositional standpoint. We continue to grow our membership, and our educational offerings are the easiest way to learn--quickly and effectively. As a "Member," we provide 36 total offerings per year! Most programs only offer 1 to 6 offerings a year and many of them, you must pay for. These 36 offerings are at 'no charge', outside of the annual membership cost. The ELLI Membership cost is currently $250/yr.--cheap! But, this will double in price starting on July 1, 2024. There's not much time left before the increase.
