Life is but a feed? Well, the first part of the Paris Olympics, which made a lot of noise, is over. Symbol upon symbol, reference upon reference, scandal upon scandal. But that's not what this is about. I want to share a little bit of my thoughts on a new format I've seen. Today, global offline events are made more for online broadcasts around the world, rather than for a small group of lucky people who bought a ticket and came to the stadium. This is no longer news to anyone. But at the Paris Olympics, I saw something really new and unfamiliar. Everything that happened at the opening ceremony seemed to have been designed to be cut into short videos and uploaded to social networks in a vertical format. That huge number of performances, homages and miniatures looked like a set of sketches. It was like scrolling through a feed from video to video and you couldn't tear yourself away. Most interestingly, it worked. People, without watching the opening ceremony, saw the separate clips on social media and jumped into the discussion, creating more and more excitement. In other words, the entire show was designed to be a compilation of highlights. What is noteworthy, the closing ceremony was no longer like that, because the attention is attracted, everyone is watching and waiting for new "reels". The scriptwriters took advantage of this and made a real spectacle, again breaking everyone's expectations. And here's an intriguing insight. This tactic is similar to the strategy of social networks page development - we make a set of absolutely different videos with viral potential, attract a loyal audience, and then on the warmed consumer give the product that we need. So the algorithm of social networks went beyond their framework and came to TV and offline performance, turning everything that happens into one big content feed. I wonder if this will be applied to other big events and what it will evolve into afterwards? And will our lives turn into one huge TikTok?

We’re New_ Public, a nonprofit R&D lab reimagining social media. We’re part of a collaboration called Public Spaces Incubator. 🇨🇦 🇧🇪 🇨🇭 🇩🇪 🇺🇸 For the last year, we’ve been working with CBC/Radio-Canada (Canada), RTBF (Belgium), SRG SSR (Switzerland), ZDF (Germany) and now we can share some of what we’ve been up to! Around the world, public media organizations play a vital role in facilitating public conversations. They act as hosts, moderators, and platforms for communities to connect and engage with each other, especially on tough subjects where people disagree. But online, true dialogue seems like it has never been more difficult. Unstructured comment sections are difficult to moderate, and most of the dominant social media platforms are toxic, chaotic, or politics-averse. Many have fled for smaller, safer spaces like private forums or group chats. So, in response, Public Spaces Incubator brings together four national public broadcasters in an unprecedented, groundbreaking collaboration across language, culture, and region. We've now developed 100 prototypes and sought feedback from more than 200 stakeholders across North America and Europe. Here’s one concept: Comments Slider allows people to submit a response (with or without a written comment) along a spectrum. The slider itself encourages users to see and share more nuanced opinions beyond the typical binary and to find common ground with others across differing opinions. We are aiming to build new, powerful ways to support audiences in talking to each other, build long-lasting relationships, and elevate new voices. Now we have serious work to do in developing these prototypes into useful design features for media organizations’ websites, apps, and other digital platforms. Check out the other test concepts, and learn about the whole project at our website below. website: newpublic.org/psi Comment Slider video: https://lnkd.in/eSAxzCN2 Press release: https://lnkd.in/e2PG8hgT #PublicConversation #PublicMedia #PSI

On social media platforms, healthy discourse and reliable news typically comes second to growth. But not every space for discussion online is ruled by revenue. How public broadcasters are prototyping the future of civic discourse:
