My book review is published on Anotasi_org. It explores how media, language, and intellectuals played a crucial role in the Indonesian national movement against colonial oppression. The review highlights how Hilmar Farid's book "Perang Suara: Bahasa dan Politik Pergerakan" examines the transformative impact of language and media in shaping national identity and political consciousness. It emphasizes the book's insights into the ideological battles within the press, the formation of a new educated elite, and the significance of inclusive narratives in fostering unity and resisting colonial dominance. Additionally, the review underscores the contemporary relevance of these historical lessons in understanding the power of media and journalism in democratic and multicultural contexts. https://lnkd.in/g3r2UnJu

Research manager, researcher, novelist, writer, editor, and educator with wide experience in government, the university sector, and the arts.
This week’s book of the week is Indonesian journalist and writer Leila S Chudori’s novel ‘Home’, published in 2012 in Indonesian and in 2015 in English translation (John H McGlynn) in 2015. Politically charged and tense, yet full of life and love, it is a fictional account of the reverberations of the violent mass crackdown that followed the September 30 Movement of 1965 in Indonesia: ‘Three years ago, the Nusantara News agency where I worked was cleansed of lice and germs like myself. The army was the disinfectant and we, the lice and the germs, were eradicated from the face of the earth, with no trace left. Yet, somehow, this particular louse had survived and was now eking out a living at Tijahaja Photo Studio on the corner of Jalan Sabang in central Jakarta’. ‘Home’ is a big book, about political repression and killings, about families and friendship, and, especially, about political repression and exile. It is still in print, with editions available from Lontar (Jakarta) and Deep Vellum (Dallas). [Note: in 2024, my creative project ‘Recommending the Future’ involves me immersing myself in grey literature – and writing back. Partly to remind myself of the world of books and partly to spruik the great ignored backlist, every Friday I am posting a book of the week.] #IndonesianFiction #backlist #greyliterature #recommendingthefuture

Today, I arrived in Surabaya for 'the 13th International Convention of Asia Scholars' (ICAS). Tomorrow, I will present my research article called 'The "Lord of Life" and the "Trunk King": The bestowment of a Ganesha statue from Candi Singasari to King Chulalongkorn and its entangled contexts, 1896-2023'. Here, I researched the unknown history of a second Ganesha statue from an Indonesian temple and how it ended up in Bangkok, Thailand. Both statues played very different roles in Siam/Thailand, the Netherlands, and Indonesia, and my paper (based on archival sources from all three countries) makes a case that we need to re-understand their meaning through their contexts and entanglements. Should you be in Surabaya and interested, please join! I hope that the insightful comments of the conference will support me in finalizing the article, which I intend to publish and then share with you! Terama kasih Indonesia! #ICAS13
