These articles about evidence that was excluded are always interesting. I must say that the click-baity headline that infers some sort of grand conspiracy to keep evidence from the jury is somewhat annoying, but the gulf between the trial that is reported and the trial the jury get to hear is always fascinating. Particularly interesting to see that a conversation between police and the offender was excluded as it obtained illegally by the officers. Various tactics have been developed to give officers more time to respond when they are attacked. One of these is commonly called curb sitting. This involves having suspects sit on the curb of a street with their legs outstretched. It is believed that having suspects sit in this position will slow them down and give officers more time to respond if they attack or try to run. Though we rejoice that the number of officers killed by gunfire went down in 2023, the number of officers shot has increased dramatically since 2018 (237 in 2018 to 378 last year). The war on cops has steadily increased. Can we "reimagine" that part of policing perhaps? "The National Fraternal Order of Police regrets to report that as of midnight on 31 December, there have been 378 officers shot in the line of duty so far in 2023 (+14% from 2022 YTD; +9% from 2021). Of those officers shot, 46 of them were killed by gunfire (-25% from 2022 YTD; -28% from 2021 YTD). There have been 115 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers this year.
