Delighted to act as Editor in Chief of this piece, produced in collaboration with Lowki Culture: ***************************************************************** “We would love to qualify the biggest team ever to represent Ireland – and we believe that is achievable”; so says High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle, on the eve of the 1st Olympic World Qualifier. 5 Irish boxers have already qualified for Paris – reigning lightweight Olympic champ, Kellie Harrington, Tokyo Olympians Belfast’s Michaela Walsh (57kg) and Roscommon’s Aoife O’Rourke (75kg); 63.5kg Dean Clancy (Sligo), and Dublin’s Jack Marley, the first Irish heavyweight in 30 years to medal at a Category A event. 8 Irish boxers will vie to do likewise at the 1st of two Olympic World Qualifiers. One weekend, 4 impeccable stories! • Rohan Bopanna – 1st grand slam at the age of 43 and becomes world no 1! • 2 sets down J. Focusing on the competition rarely works out. If every Olympic athlete we just saw in Paris win medals was focused solely on their competition, they wouldn’t have a medal around their necks. I see many people on social media and other platforms crying for the disqualification of Ms Vinesh Phogat from the Olympics finals. I too feel sorry for her but.... My post is not about the person but the lessons (as professionals) we must learn from the incident 1. Learn from the earlier mistakes - Vinesh was disqualified from the Olympics earlier also on the same ground (overweight in category) 2. Never bulldoze your weight/influence on the natural process of selection. You will and should get what you deserve or have competence to achieve 3. Be a team player (she opted for a special personal team for herself and not the IOA team) 4. To achieve your goals, never kill the aspirations or dreams of your colleagues who might be equally competent. You need good wishes(other than competence) too to succeed. Refer the pic... Story of Shivani Kumar and some facts about Vinesh's selection process 5. Don't ever blame others for your failure, you are the creator of your own destiny 7. Remember, when you are in a team, keep your problems with yourself and potray a pic which motivates everyone around. A team is more important than an individual. That's Professionalism 6. Last but not least, life is like a sport, success and failures are part and partial and one must take both into the strides and move on Just a random string of thoughts. BWT Group Alpine F1 Team heads to Imola for Round 7 of the 2024 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Good luck to Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, fingers crossed for more points. The first point of the season in Miami shows that we are making progress after a very difficult start to our campaign. In the last two races we have demonstrated a slight rise in competitiveness and ability to race in more encouraging positions on track. Even if part of that is due to some track specifics, we have been able to unlock some performance courtesy of our upgrades. We will not be bringing any significant ones over the next few races, but we keep pushing hard at the factories to improve the car and extract more performance. This weekend is our first European race of the season and a return to a conventional track. Imola is synonymous with Formula 1, it’s really a legendary circuit. It’s very fast, tight, challenging and it’s great to still race at these iconic tracks. It’s back to a normal race weekend without a Sprint, so we will aim to have a constructive Friday and set ourselves up well for the remainder of the weekend when it counts. Other than Canada, this is the beginning of an intense period on the calendar racing through Europe right until the summer break. Else he will start to develop a pole-to-win conversion record like Charles Leclerc. Had he made a better race start in Hungary, he could avoided the drama at the end to win. One would almost start to believe he's just toying with us. For a few days, during winter testing and the first practice sessions of the #BahrainGP, he made us think that maybe, just maybe, we'd have a fight for the win on our hands this weekend. But alas, Sunday's race gave us another absolutely dominant drive by Formula 1's current superhero. Max Verstappen was, once again, unbeatable, winning the race with an absolutely staggering 22.5 second lead over his team mate Sergio Perez. I'm running out of superlatives when it comes to describing how incredible it is what he's doing. Particularly during a weekend that saw him confronted with mass speculation about the future of Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner. It did not seem to distract Verstappen one bit. He came to race, and race is what he did. The same could not be said for his former team mate Pierre Gasly's Alpine. Expectations weren't high, but I don't know if they had expected to be plum last. (OK, aside from Bottas, whose team appeared to want to break the record for world's longest pit stop, and Sargeant, who had an intriguing off-track moment that may or may not have been his own doing.) Alpine have been through the wringer in the past season, and it appears they need to figure out who they are as a team, and what their strategy is. The sequence of events (i.e. multiple leadership changes at the most senior level) that led them to where they are today, is a great example of how important leadership is for the success of a team. Sure, many other factors play a role, but people are hierarchical beings. We look for leadership and when it isn't there, we struggle. One of the most important elements of high performance leadership is transparancy, consistency, and congruency in communication and decision making. If this is lacking, people will start making assumptions, they will start filling in the blanks of what is happening and why. This results in miscommunication and misalignment, which is incredibly detrimental to performance. In his pre-season interview Pierre Gasly expressed his desire to fight at the front: https://lnkd.in/epBj23th Both he and his team mate Esteban Ocon are race winners, and they will have certain expectations in terms of the potential of their equipment. I'm sure Alpine's current team principal Bruno Famin is aware of this, and I sincerely hope the team are working on building a strong leadership team that understands the importance of clarity in communication for maintaining a high performance culture. If not, then chances are not just Pierre and Esteban, but all of their high performers will start looking elsewhere. This translates directly to the world of work: for talent retention and sustainable high performance, strong leadership is crucial! #leadership #highperformance #culture
