Transforming the mental health of our children by providing them with the tools and techniques to better understand and manage their feelings and emotions.
Still thinking about what to do for Children's Mental Health Week in February? We've got you! A one day, online workshop, for KS1 and KS2, fully planned and resourced. This year's theme is My Voice Matters. And your voice comes from your thoughts, which in turn creates emotions and behaviour. Our one day, online workshop will teach children how to work with their thoughts and give them real life skills to be able to do this. Yes, your voice matters! But without realising that this has come from your thoughts, then your voice may not be portraying exactly what you want it to.

The words we use make a difference. Research shows that child mental health experts and practitioners working with children, parents and families have different understandings about children’s mental health. How we communicate our messages is key to bridging this gap. We've partnered with the Frameworks Institute to develop the Children’s mental health and social determinants of health mini toolkit. This toolkit builds on our original framework, providing specific guidance and recommendations for communicating about the social determinants of children’s mental health. Effective, powerful communication is essential to spark hope and new ideas for families who might be going through tough times. https://bit.ly/46iM9LX

For many parents, it can be overwhelming to know how to support children as they navigate the ups and downs of daily life. As a practitioner, you might be familiar with the PERCS (Parent-child relationships; Emotions and behaviours; Routines; Communication and meaning-making; and Support networks) approach which features in several of our online courses and resources. As part of our 'Understanding and supporting children’s mental health' resource collection, we have now adapted PERCS for parents to use as a handy, succinct tool to help support their children’s mental health, now and in the future. The PERCS for parents suite is a series of five in-focus articles which include brief videos with parents and practitioners discussing the PERCS concept, check them out today. https://bit.ly/4bKRltK

Today marks the beginning of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek 💚 At NCB, we want all children and young people to grow up as physically and mentally healthy as they can be, but we are aware that there is still so much work to be done. In 2021-22, 1.4 million children were estimated to have a mental health condition in England, but less than half received at least one appointment with children and young people mental health services (CYPMHS or CAMHS) – while a third referred for support was turned away. (source: https://buff.ly/3WzvBwx) Our new strategy #BuildingBrighterFutures explains what changes we want to see that will help tackle the root causes of poor mental health and wellbeing, making sure children get the support they need at the right time. Read more about it here: strategy.ncb.org.uk And find out more about our work on children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing here: https://buff.ly/44HkQuc

It's crucial that we address the emerging issues highlighted in this article, especially concerning the mental health challenges faced by teens today. At Trillium, we recognize the importance of providing support and resources to help young people navigate these complex issues. Our mission is to empower teens with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. The findings by Vicki Harrison underscore the urgency for collaborative efforts between educators, parents, mental health professionals, and policymakers. By working together, we can create environments that promote positive mental health and well-being for all adolescents. At Trillium, we're committed to developing innovative solutions that address the root causes of these challenges and foster resilience in young people. Through our programs and initiatives, we aim to equip teens with coping strategies, emotional intelligence, and a strong support network to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.

Love listening to my colleagues at The Jed Foundation (JED) share our work on such an important topic: Beyond Stigma: Mental Health Help-Seeking Behaviors in Teens. Thank you Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children's Mental Health for your partnership in this work! Looking forward to learning from about Kamla Modi, Ph.D., Michelle G. Mullen, PhD, and John MacPhee about important findings from JED's new research, including top concerns holding teens back from asking for help, where teens turn for support and what they really want when reaching out for help, and how parents and other adults can better enable teens to talk about their mental health.
