I love a good quitting story. Cassie Kozyrkov wrote a great article that talks about her decision to leave her position as Chief Decision Scientist at Google (link in the comments). One of the key lines that stood out was "My comfort was calcifying." As the great poet Bane once said in the movie The Dark Knight Rises, "Peace has cost you your strength. Victory has defeated you." Reading her article got me thinking about my own experiences leaving companies. I'm no stranger to quitting. Over my 16-year professional career, I've been at 8 different companies. My smallest stint was 2 months and my longest was 5.5 years. I have observed similarities in the data industry after working in many companies. There are 3 truths I have learned about from leaving companies: 1️⃣ The day after you leave, the company will still deliver its products and services. It will still make money. All your former coworkers will still show up to work. 2️⃣ There will be a discussion about whether to backfill your role, move the headcount to another department, or do nothing and take the salary/benefits savings. More than likely, you'll see your old job posted on the company's career page a few days after you leave. 3️⃣ No one is going to call you begging you to return or tell you that everything is on fire and nothing works. If things are unclear, they'll figure it out or decide to not do it anymore. These truths should not be thought of as negative. They offer peace of mind to those considering leaving their current role. You are probably not as important as you think you are. There is another company that can also use your talents. If you feel that it is time to move on and grow your career in another way, it may be time to listen and think about it.

Communications & Change Pro | Demystifying the art & science of corporate communications | Book nerd | Avid DIY attempter
⌛ 14 years in the making... As a millennial, I very much enjoy the endearing and sometimes cringe-inducing flashbacks of Facebook Memories... you know, where it shows your post from this day, X number of years ago. Last week, the memory was a post from 14 years ago, announcing my very first day working at Volvo Construction Equipment in Shippensburg, PA. I've been thinking about the past 14 years quite a bit since then and while they somehow seem simultaneously instantaneous and eternal, it's been fun thinking about what I've been able to do. 15,000 global employees supported 20 events planned 9 countries visited 5 pieces of heavy equipment operated 4 companies I called home (Volvo Construction Equipment, Rokbak, TE Connectivity, Gladius Communications) 3 location moves 1 epic karaoke night (thanks to my duet partner, Takeo Kushibiki) 1 ✨perfect ✨ blooper reel by Josh Youngbar ...and countless lessons learned, relationships built, and friendships forged. Things are constantly busy, deadlines are always looming, but it's important that we pause and reflect on where we've been and what we've been able to accomplish. 👇 PS- I had way too much fun looking through pictures of team buildings, big events and cool opportunities- what's one of your favorite things you've done in your career?
