We hope environmental organizations will continue to embrace increasing the use of biofuels as one of their goals to reduce the carbon content and toxic emissions from every gallon of gasoline and diesel in every vehicle every day. The path to a healthier environment and environmental justice has to be paved with cleaner fuels and powered by educated consumers. While new markets and technologies for electric vehicles continue to develop, there are no good reasons not to use biofuels to replace the benzene and benzene-laced aromatics in gasoline and diesel fuel. #gasolinegate

On the last day of the year, I usually like to end on a positive note. But this year, I am deeply concerned about the future of dance and arts education. After only a year of post-pandemic recovery, we confront a new harsh landscape. NYC’s unprecedented budget cuts, compounded by a shift away from the arts by a number of foundations, will significantly impact the number of under-resourced schools in low-income communities that we can serve to keep our programs free to children and families. There will be no federal lifeline of support this time around. We need individuals and the private sector to step up to keep kids healthy and growing through the arts. Mayor Adams’s November 2023 financial plans call for, “A (sic) two-year reduction to arts programs and institutions is $16.4 million.”  At the same time, “the Department of Youth and Community Development loses approximately $30M in the current year and $43.7M next year, including substantial cuts to Summer Rising and Compass after-school programs. In NYC Public Schools two-year cuts amount to more than $1 billion.” All of these agencies contribute to allowing our programs to be free for children and families. Today, we released the Bloomberg Philanthropies' 2024 annual report. This gives you insights into the work we’re leading around the world, including the impact we’re making through programs like the Greenwood Initiative.   A few highlights: 1. Our historic investment at our nation’s four historically Black medical students has led to nearly 1,000 students receiving up to $100,000 to reduce their debt and significantly expanded opportunities for Black doctors to practice in underserved communities. 2. We celebrated the 2nd cohort of Vivien Thomas Scholars at The Johns Hopkins University, a program we endowed to support a new, more diverse generation of scholars and researchers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.  3. We have continued to grow and strengthen the Black Wealth Data Center to provide public and private sector leaders with comprehensive data to advance racial wealth equity.   Thank you to everyone who has partnered with us this year.
