Impossible choices: decisions NSW communities shouldn’t have to make This report investigates the impact of rising cost of living on people living in poverty and in low-income households across NSW. This year, the research shone a spotlight on the impact of these pressures on households with children. The findings show little improvement in the capacity of low-income households to meet their basic needs as they struggle to keep up with rising cost of living pressures. In some cases, it’s worsened. These pressures are causing households to make greater sacrifices for themselves and their children. The ripple effects are causing more stress and tension within households, affecting relationships, mental health and well-being and child development outcomes. Low-income households are in a state of perpetual crisis. Community services face rising community needs, which are becoming more intense, urgent, and complex. The community needs key decision makers to take urgent action.

ADDRESSING THE REAL CRISIS: HOPELESS, NOT HOMELESS In our discussions about societal challenges, we often focus on homelessness as a critical issue. While providing shelter is essential, we must also recognize and address another profound crisis: hopelessness. Hopelessness affects individuals who may have a roof over their heads but lack the optimism and purpose to move forward. It can stem from various sources, such as economic insecurity, mental health struggles, social isolation, and systemic inequalities. To create a truly supportive community, we need to: 😶🌫️Enhance Mental Health Support. Access to affordable counseling and mental health services is crucial. 😶🌫️Foster Economic Stability: Policies ensuring job security and fair wages can alleviate financial stress. 😶🌫️Build Community Connections**: Encouraging social engagement combats isolation and fosters belonging. 😶🌫️Promote Educational Opportunities: Access to education empowers individuals to improve their circumstances. 😶🌫️Address Systemic Inequalities: Comprehensive policies promoting equity are fundamental. Let's expand our focus from simply providing homes to fostering hope. Together, we can create a society where everyone not only survives but thrives. #MentalHealth #CommunitySupport #EconomicStability #Education #Equity #HopelessNotHomeless

Barriers To Rehabilitation: The Struggle To Escape Prostitution. Factor 3 Lack of Support Systems🏋♀️🏋♀️🫂🫂💪💪 The absence of strong support systems, both personal and institutional, can severely hinder rehabilitation efforts.👎👎👎 Family and community support play a critical role in recovery, but many individuals exiting prostitution face rejection from their loved ones. Additionally, they may be isolated from their former social circles due to the criminal and clandestine nature of prostitution.💋💅 Institutionally, many countries lack comprehensive programs that offer holistic rehabilitation, which includes housing, healthcare, education, and mental health services. Without adequate support, individuals may find themselves slipping back into prostitution as they attempt to navigate the many challenges of post-prostitution life alone.🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ Communities and governments need to invest in comprehensive social services that address the unique needs of these individuals. We are using this medium to create awareness and research on possible sustainable solutions to address such pending issues. #sdg #usaid #sweat #solutions #change #growth #endpoverty #descentemployment #support #awareness #holisticrehabilitation

Using Growing Up in Scotland data, Morag Treanor and Patricio Troncoso explore how social factors can reduce disparities in poverty, health, housing, and discrimination for young people. Their research highlights the effects of poverty on children's social, emotional, and behavioural outcomes and maternal mental health. Findings show that unstable work and poverty significantly impact children's behaviour and mental health, with a close link between parental and child mental health over time. The research emphasises the need for holistic, family-wide approaches to policy, focusing on structural inequalities, particularly poverty, that influence both parents and children. Access to services like education is also vital in reducing these disparities. Their findings have influenced Scotland’s Child Poverty Act 2017, local authority practices, and professional training to better support families in poverty, demonstrating the far-reaching impacts of tackling family wellbeing. #Research #ChildPoverty #MentalHealth #Wellbeing

A lot of people in BC are having a hard financial time right now, but autistic people face disproportionate amounts of income inequality. It’s an issue that affects our ability to take care of ourselves, live a life we’re excited about, and build meaningful careers. Those are just a few of the impacts. But why are autistic adults in poverty? 🤔 - Being unable to work full-time - Inaccessible applications for government support - Systemic oppression due to ableism, racism, sexism, and other harmful ideologies prevents people from getting opportunities - Needing to pay for healthcare that isn’t covered by insurance or the government - Needing to rely on families or partners to cover living expenses - Having no family to rely on - Long waitlists and prohibitive costs for assessment and diagnosis - Inability to be on PWD and EI payments simultaneously and caps on amounts make it hard to make enough to afford necessities Watch our full video on YouTube to take a deep dive into some of the causes. We believe #equityisworthwhile at AutismBC. Are you an autistic person struggling with money? What kinds of professional opportunities do you find helpful? If you’re a caregiver or loved one of an autistic person with helpful tips, insights, or comments, we’d also love to hear from you in the comments. 💬 Stay tuned for more updates on this campaign! https://lnkd.in/gDH6kvqw
