Director, Community Relations at San Diego Gas & Electric

Earlier this week, San Diego Gas & Electric’s Community Relations department hosted The Conference Board's Corporate Citizenship Joint Council’s meeting in San Diego. This remarkable gathering brought together leaders from across the country, all dedicated to improving our planet’s health through community engagement. For those unfamiliar with the Conference Board, it stands as a trusted nonprofit think tank, providing invaluable insights & data to help businesses navigate the complexities of the global economy. I take pride in the Conference Board’s work, equipping leaders with the knowledge needed for informed decisions through rigorous research, practical solutions, & peer-to-peer networking opportunities. As a member of the Conference Board, I had the distinct pleasure of welcoming senior executives from Fortune 250 companies. These leaders oversee corporate responsibility, environmental impact, community engagement, & philanthropy. Over 3 days, attendees witnessed firsthand our region’s ability to unite corporate social responsibility & sustainability. Charles Hopper welcomed participants at Birch Aquarium at Scripps, showcasing hands-on learning & climate-based programming benefiting over 40,000 K-12 students annually. Josh Fryday explored the intersection of philanthropy & public policy for the common good. Bill Payne and the Second Chance staff showcased their Youth Garden, which cultivates urban farming & classroom learning for youth leaders through hands on work and job development workshops. Caroline Winn delivered inspiring opening remarks, Mayor Todd Gloria highlighted the intersectionality of local government & philanthropy & Mark Cafferty provided an economic outlook of our binational region. Collaborative San Diego philanthropy took center stage with a panel featuring Pamela Gray Payton, MSEL, Valerie Attisha & myself. Hosted by Shaina Gross, we emphasized trust, community listening & collaboration as the backbone of lifting our communities forward. Estela de Llanos & Brian D'Agostino showcased SDG&E’s laser focus on climate resilience & sustainability, principles that have guided our operations for decades. Paul Baribault welcomed attendees at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, showcasing their world renowned conservation efforts & emphasizing that when wildlife thrives, all life thrives. Additionally, Consul General Mexico - Ambassador Alicia Kerber-Palma shared her vision of how philanthropy contributes to our binational relationship. I extend heart felt gratitude to all the panelists & site hosts who shared their wealth of knowledge. From the state of philanthropy in San Diego to our region’s economic outlook, SDG&E’s commitment to climate resilience & the unique challenges of our binational context, their contributions were invaluable. And a special kudos to Shaina Gross, Morgan Justice-Black, & Marvin Ordonez for orchestrating an amazing program that truly represented the spirit of San Diego. #SDGEgiving

Exciting, Kazeem! I know we have several staff at the Garden who could speak to how climate change will affect what plants we can grow/eat and how we’re working with tribal communities to prepare for climate change resiliency. Happy to connect you for the next speaking opportunity! 😎
