Geopolitical tensions are driving oil prices up Following the boarding of the oil tanker St. Nikolas by armed men near Sohar, Oman, oil futures rallied 2% in early trading. The tanker, loaded with 1.04 million bbl of oil, was seized by the United States in 2023 and was sailing to western Turkey. This incident, along with recent attacks on commercial shipping, has heightened geopolitical risk in the Middle East. As a result, NYMEX February WTI futures were up $1.45 at $72.82 bbl, and ICE March Brent futures were up $1.45 at $78.25 bbl. Stay tuned for updates on how these events continue to impact oil prices.

Prior to recent attacks by #Houthi rebels on cargo ships, nearly 12% of the world’s seaborne trade used the #Suez Canal and therefore, went through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to enter or exit the Red Sea. “In terms of petroleum (crude oil and oil products), more than 6.2 million barrels per day of petroleum traveled through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, either through the Suez Canal or to the SUMED pipeline, which runs from south of the canal west and north across Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. This reflects a little more than 9 percent of the total seaborne petroleum trade,” explains Ellen R. Wald. Read her take explaining why recent Houthi attacks could threaten global seaborne trade.

A lot more could be done to strengthen compliance. #oott #darkfleet #OFAC #maritime #vessels #iran #china #russia #india #uae #syria #venezuela #turkey #saudi #oil #barrels #sanctioncompliance #sanctions #compliance #illicittrade #exports #imports

Middle Eastern countries striving to diversify their economies and attract foreign #investment have become intertwined in the global flow of goods and services, beyond just oil and gas production. The reports on AML/CFT issues in the UAE just keep coming. Today a report on conflict gold by SWISSAID: https://lnkd.in/d_WWn38P 🚨 Swissaid said the UAE was the main destination for Africa’s smuggled gold and took in 405 tonnes in 2022. 📑 New due diligence requirements on gold came into force in January 2023, but the new legal framework "has yet to prove itself". 🔎 In June 2023, the UN Group of Experts on the DRC expressed doubts about the way in which the a UAE-based refinery was exercising its due diligence. ❗ This refinery told Swissaid in November 2022, "that the new regulations would not change his company’s practices and that it would continue to source gold without carrying out checks at the mines". "This example clearly illustrates the task facing the Emirati authorities: they must at all costs ensure the effective implementation of these new regulations, supervise the activities of the refineries and impose sanctions in the event of non-compliance with the rules." 👏 👏 👏 Or simply put, effectiveness above all. 🇪🇺 PS. The European Parliament made the right call in maintaining the UAE on its greylist considering the lack of evidence of change in practice. Just saying. #conflictgold | #AMLCFT | #sanctions | #greylist

1wGoing on for ages in India. The smuggling activity should now be reduced as the import duty has now been reduced to 6% from earlier 15%. A further reduction of another 2% will make smuggling practically zero.
