The IET Sector Development team are at the Mari-Tech Conference and Exhibition this week represented by Ross Houlihan and Philip White. This year's theme is Navigating Sustainable Marine Transportation. Sustainable solutions are needed to meet the current realities and challenges we face globally in ship construction, vessel operation and maintenance. These factors are dependent on materials, knowledge and skills, all of which are trending towards increasing demand and decreasing supply. New and advancing technologies offer astounding potential but need to be rigorously tested and approved before deployment. Ocean technology is pivotal in modern shipbuilding, driving advancements that lead to more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly maritime operations. By integrating cutting-edge tech in design, construction, operation, and compliance, the shipbuilding industry continues to evolve, meeting the increasing demands of global maritime trade and environmental stewardship. Newfoundland and Labrador is rich with ocean tech innovators and ready to step to the forefront as a leader in Canada's ocean industries. Scotland to use ‘best science and data’ to shape marine policy The Scottish Government has published its Marine Science and Innovation Strategy which it says highlights the crucial role of science and innovation in realising the full potential of the marine environment. The Strategy – part of the Scottish Government’s Blue Economy Vision to 2045 – is said to be a blueprint for ministers to utilise the best available science, evidence, and data for making informed marine management decisions that benefit the economy, environment, and society, including coastal and island communities. 🌊 Plastic waste is a major problem for marine ecosystems. Every year, around 600,000 tons of plastic litter enters European seas, destroying habitats, poisoning marine life and endangering entire underwater ecosystems. SeaClear 1.0 & 2.0 Projects has developed intelligent robots to clear the seabed of litter. The consortium combines public engagement, marine technology, and recycling know-how for comprehensive ocean environmental protection. They are working on developing a tender unmanned surface vehicle (USV), onto which the collected litter is deposited and brought to shore autonomously.
