🙌 It’s a wrap! Today we mark the end of the TCarta 2-week training in Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB) and Sargassum detection for the Hydrographic Service in the Dominican Republic. 🤝 We are very happy to collaborate once again with longtime partners TCarta Marine and Esri for this opportunity to take place! Many thanks to TCarta leaders Corey Goodrich and Kyle Goodrich for their collaboration and good spirits, David Bautista, Ross Smith, and Graeme Timmeney from TCarta for their specialized and quality-focused instruction and to our very own Sheila Cáceres Ferreras and Vicki Ferrini, PhD from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans Regional Center for connecting with the Dominican Hydrographic Service and making all of this happen! 🌐 As a result of this training, the Dominican Republic will now have a national 10-meter resolution Coastal Bathymetry Dataset that will be contributed to the GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans grid! Additionally, the training leaves behind a group of SDB and Sargassum detection experts within their Hydrographic Service, with their learned knowledge and skills being able to grow and be passed on. 📊 #Hydrography #DominicanRepublic #TCarta #Esri #GEBCO #Hydrospatial

The EuroGO-SHIP tribe gathering in Venice today for the project’s 2nd Annual Meeting. Excellent updates on the progress made toward piloting best practice methods, streamlining FAIR data flow, and understanding the needs of regional hydrography communities through broad consultations. Some of the areas we discussed today include: · The importance of gaining a clear picture of all ship-based hydrography activity being conducted in Europe. · The need for an ongoing focus on piloting best practices for the ship-based hydrography community beyond the project's timeline. · Assessing statistical features of trend detection to increase understanding of ocean properties. · Developing useful software apps for running quality control in ship-board labs. · The benefits of working side-by-side when conducting sample comparison analyses versus comparing documents. · The importance of surveying and following up with end-users to firmly establish ongoing links. The day ended on an optimistic note spurred by excellent insights for next steps. Stay tuned for Day Two! I'm pleased to have contributed as a speaker to the International Geomorphology Week 2024, hosted by IAG. During the Western European webinar, we reflected on a crucial aspect of #Landslides research: how to assess the spatio-temporal evolution of slow-moving landslides. By establishing effective long-term monitoring protocols, we can better understand these underestimated processes and mark potential acceleration stages. 🚨 HII Delivers Advanced REMUS 620 UUVs to NOAA – A Major Leap Forward for Ocean Mapping and Restoration! 🌊 Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has delivered two state-of-the-art REMUS 620 uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) to NOAA, specifically designed for high-resolution ocean floor mapping. 🌍 This is huge news for ocean research and restoration! The REMUS 620, introduced in 2022, represents a significant advancement in UUV technology. With its enhanced capabilities—both above and below water—it’s tailor-made for long-distance operations, helping NOAA accelerate critical environmental efforts. These vehicles will be deployed in the Gulf of Mexico to restore seafloor habitats damaged by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, pushing forward marine exploration and habitat restoration like never before. 🚤🌱 HII’s swift delivery highlights the growing demand for the REMUS 620 and its ability to deliver cutting-edge technology that meets urgent mission needs. NOAA’s use of these advanced UUVs will transform habitat restoration, marine archaeology, and oceanographic research—enhancing our ability to protect and understand the marine environment. 🌊 Globally, over 600 REMUS UUVs are in operation across more than 30 countries, including 14 NATO member nations, and their longevity speaks volumes about their durability and versatility. This is a major step forward for ocean tech, sustainability, and environmental recovery. #OceanTech #UUV #MarineResearch #EnvironmentalRestoration #Innovation #Sustainability #OceanMapping #DeepwaterHorizon #NOAA #FutureOfOceans
