How do we achieve genetic improvement? Selection and mating the best to the best is a laymen's answer. What about when what is 'best' changes? Keep selecting. What if we lose our genetic diversity from which to select? Then we are in trouble... As are some of our breeds of livestock that may not be competitive in today's production systems and mainstream markets. But they matter, and they represent a wealth of genetic diversity. And there is an organization focused on preserving these breeds: The Livestock Conservancy. Why am I posting about them here? They are in the process of hiring a new executive director to oversee the great work they do, and I am guessing there are people on here who might be or who know people who might be interested in learning more... see links below for more on the organization and the job. https://lnkd.in/gaXtEjQN https://lnkd.in/gW8nFe3y

Does anyone really read Animal Farm? I "read it" in 8th grade at my very private and very Southern school. I don't remember much, but I remember the scene when the other farm animals watched the pigs walk out of the farmer's house on their hind legs, standing up. Relatedly, maybe, I've been experiencing weird founders' growth issues. When we started, everyone was stepping over each other everyday at our operations hub, which was actually a one-acre plot with a creek and feral chickens in the middle of the Houston Heights. Today, we are 18 folks spread across 3 cities, all working remotely. Recently, I find myself randomly calling team members to tell them I miss them. It feels oddly vulnerable, but urgent nonetheless. The job we all do everyday is pretty straight forward. We save food waste and its embedded nutrients from the landfill. We divvy up responsibilities among collectors, evangelists, operations managers, data managers, and bean counters. What I miss is the feeling that we were all relating everyday. At a USCC conference in 2022, one of the co-founders of a peer company explained to me their hiring process, and it stuck with me how intensive it was. So many touch points across so many varying groups. At the time, I scoffed. It stuck with me, though, kinda like that scene from Animal Farm did. I'm not sure what we are building here Moonshot. I know it's working, and I know it's growing. I know we are way smarter than we used to be. And I know I miss the way it used to be. And I know we have to be more than 10x bigger one day than we are today. Everyday, we are offered the opportunity to re-invent ourselves in the vision of the next opportunity we are selling. So far, we check every opportunity against our values: is it safe, does it make a difference for the potential subscriber, does it hurt our current business, is it a net positive for the environment, does it cover our margin? There's a couple more check points, but that's pretty much it. As we grow larger, I'm adding another test: does it have me walking out of the farmer's house on my hind legs?

That’s not my job…… Did you read the story of the person who lovingly cared for a baby hedgehog before finding out it was a bobble hat? https://lnkd.in/eGXk4x_c It was a funny story about a well-intended person who saw what they thought was an injured animal and created a home for it and fed it before taking it to a vet for medical attention. The vets then confirmed that it was actually the pompom from a bobble hat. What I love about this story is the care of the person who found the pompom. They did everything possible to help. As far as we know they didn’t have any expertise in the health or habitats of hedgehogs, but they still helped. Some of the best people I’ve ever worked with are like this, if they see a problem, they solve it. They don't wait to find someone else or ignore it, they focussed on what they could do. * People with that attitude succeed in environments like Blink, not being stuck in a swim lane or waiting to be asked to do something, jumping in, solving problems and making a difference every single day. We have graduate/early career roles in our Marketing and People teams with this approach People who have impact through being smart and a bias action – is that you or someone you know? If it is, put them in touch with me and I’ll get them connected to our team. * Those people would also have checked if it was actually a hedgehog. #graduatehiring #hiring #techrecruitment
