[DID YOU KNOW?] The beginnings of the development of the Port of Rijeka 🚢 The area of the port itself, whether viewed as a single entity or separately as the Ports of Rijeka and Sušak, is inextricably linked with the historical development of the city. Since the time of old Tarsatika, the city needed specific docks that would receive smaller and larger coastal sailing ships, the galleys of the time and later merchant ships. This was well recorded by Ivan Klobučarić in his graphics at the end of the 16th century. The very location of the town of Rijeka, which is deeply embedded in the northernmost part of the Kvarner Gulf, and its inhospitable narrow hinterland inevitably led to the town turning towards the sea, to maritime trade, i.e. shipping in general. In the centuries that preceded the emergence of the modern Port of Rijeka, which occurred in the second half of the 19th century, the area of the Dead Canal (Mrtvi kanal), the former mouth of the Rječina River, played the main role of a ship dock, which was used for this purpose until 1855. The Dead Canal is the name of a smaller sea channel that separated the two parts of the city of Rijeka – Rijeka and Sušak i.e. two kingdoms being the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. At the very mouth of the Rječina, and thus along the canal, as of 1689 there was the brotherhood of St. Nicholas, which also owned a small shipyard. Until the mid-19th century, today's canal was the mouth of the Rječina, but with the decision of the city authorities and the construction of a new river delta, it became a smaller port, 33 m wide and 500 m long, intended only for smaller coastal sailing ships and wooden boats. Even in the first half of the 20th century, the Dead Canal was still the main port for the landing of smaller commercial sailing ships, braceras, trabacalos, etc. that brought goods from other parts of the Adriatic and from the islands to Rijeka.
