TGIF, Nonprofit Nerds and Philanthropy Geeks!
It's "go-time" again. And here's some good news:
There are 3 simple, quick things you can do RIGHT NOW to help Defend Nonprofits and Defend Democracy. Today. Right now.
Your org can join Fund the People in signing an important new document -- an Open Letter to Congress from all of us in the Nonprofit and Philanthropic Community! This great letter was initiated and shared today by our amazing colleagues over at the National Council of Nonprofits.
Here are the 3 Simple Things YOU CAN Do Right Now to Help:
1. SIGN IT: Sign the Letter on behalf of your organization. (If you don't have such authority, share it with your ED/CEO and/or your Board for them to consider signing!)
2. SHARE IT: Share the letter with your nonprofit and philanthropy networks, and encourage other orgs to sign. Re-Post this post. Tag friends in the comments. Re-power this post to Linkedin Groups. Grab the link below and send it by emails, or other social media!
3. SAY IT: Once you Sign It and/or Share It, just write "DONE!" in the comments on this post. We want to see at least 20 "done" comments by the end of business today!
THEN YOU CAN WIN A FUND THE PEOPLE CARE PACKAGE: Orgs that post "DONE!" in the comments will be entered into a random draw - three randomly selected orgs will get a care package of Fund the People pens, pins, and goodies. (After we confirm your org actually signed the letter, and once you give us your mailing address.)
The straight-forward, 2-page letter lays out 4 key ways nonprofits serve the constituents and interests of every U.S. Senator and House Member:
1. Nonprofits are employers that offer a significant number of jobs to the American people in every state and congressional district, representing 10% of private employment in the country;
2. Nonprofits [and, we would add, their employees] provide the government with $65 billion in payroll taxes and other taxes;
3. Nonprofits are relied upon by federal, state, and local government to deliver vital goods and services to their constituents;
4. Nonprofits are among the most trusted institutions in the country because we are -- and wish to remain -- nonpartisan in nature.
The letter also encourages Congress to reform the 2017 tax law (which decreased charitable giving from 30% of taxpayers to about 7%), by creating a "non-itemizer charitable deduction" that would incentivize giving among all Americans.
Facts alone won't shape the narrative, especially as some elected officials actively smear and threaten nonprofits and philanthropy. But we must communicate and educate all our elected officials as we try to shape the narrative toward a vision of Powerful Nonprofits and a Strong Democracy. This letter is a good step. We hope you sign!

There is much at stake for charitable nonprofits as the 119th Congress gets busy. Lawmakers will decide momentous policy questions that can have a profound impact – positive or negative – on the ability of local organizations to improve lives, strengthen communities, and advance the public good.
