While performing an infrared inspection at a new Class A office building, a SEAM Group technician identified, documented, and notified the client of a poor connection in the switchgear. The client contacted the manufacturer, and plans were made to address the issue within days. Unfortunately, the issue escalated quickly, and the switchgear caught on fire, causing a catastrophic failure of the building's electrical system. Building tenants had to stay out of their new offices for days while repairs were performed. Takeaways: - Working with an IR inspection partner that leverages technology to document and escalate issues matters. With ViewPoint®, our customers see what we see through visual inspection photos and thermal images. We rank issues based on criticality to help with prioritization and risk mitigation. - Reducing unplanned downtime and impact on end customers requires a risk-based approach to corrective maintenance. - While all electrical issues should be addressed quickly, corrective action on more critical assets like switchgear should always be prioritized.
