Stations and trains are all about destinations and decisions. It is figuring out where you’re going to go and actualizing the process to get tickets and get your ass on the rail car. It’s pretty simple, but it takes planning. It takes patience to know that not everything will happen the way and when you want. It's time to get off the grid. Car-dependency is killing our cities and our planet. Here's how to make public transport better: 1. Prioritize accessibility. Make it easy for someone to get to the bus or train station. 2. Make it safe. People are less likely to ride if they don't feel safe. 3. Make it fast. Invest in dedicated bus lanes and streamline routes. 4. Make it reliable. Nobody likes waiting in the rain for an unreliable bus. 5. Make it comfortable. Cleanliness and comfort are major factors in rider satisfaction. We need to work together to make public transportation an indispensable part of modern life. A future where getting on a train means less traffic, less pollution, and less congestion is a future worth fighting for.

Last week, I took one short-haul flight and a total of 18 trains! Many of those trains were unreliable and running late, causing mayhem for connections. On all of those trains, I spent my entire time checking the announcements, my phone for updates, and generally wasted my attention on keeping up with the disruptions. When the trains ran smoothly and on time, I could sit back and enjoy reading my book. When our environment is uncertain and unpredictable, all of our energy and attention gets sucked into simply managing to stay afloat and keeping on track. When our environment is predictable and reliable, we can relax into what we actually want to do and we are in control of our focus and attention.
