Guest expectations are at an all-time high. And when your company’s second core value is “exceeding expectations,” it really keeps you on your toes. This is the 5th year in a row that we have presented Thanksgiving pies to all of our in-house guests. Or was a great idea that Corey Hawks suggested and it’s a keeper. I don’t know who’s having more fun, the employees or the guests! We now have guests that call the office and ask if they are getting a pecan or pumpkin pie as they plan their menus. My favorite today, though was a first time guest who was so excited to receive their Thanksgiving pie since a bear had broken into their car last night and ate their dessert! Lessons we’ve learned from trying to exceeded expectations. *Guest begin to expect a certain level of service and you need to be thoughtful about executing services that are sustainable for the long haul. *Make changes to create a sense of surprise and delight, but keep traditions that really warm the heart – – of the employees and the guests. *Have fun and engage all of your employees in the process. *Offer options—not everyone loves pumpkin pie like I do. I love the story of the first Thanksgiving, where Pilgrims and Native Americans came together to celebrate a successful harvest over a shared meal. It’s a great example of how food connects us all. My most treasured memories are of my family gathering around a table, sharing stories, enjoying a meal, and each other’s company (for the most part). 😅 Sharing a meal is a wonderful way to foster deep connections with colleagues, friends, and family. Opportunities to improve our lives are everywhere. For example, Thanksgiving isn't a good as it could be. Here are five simple changes to make it better... 1. Cleanup - If each attendee chips in for a cleaner/task-rabbit to handle cleanup (dishes, vacuuming, etc), everyone gets more time to sit back, relax, or do literally anything else they want. I've never done it, but the suggestion is thrown out every year. 2. Food Selection - there is a reason most 'classic thanksgiving foods' only show up once per year: they aren't that good. My favorite Thanksgiving meals had steak (yum) instead of turkey (meh). 3. Food Preparation - Cater! We claim "time with loved ones" is why holidays exist... yet many family members spend hours alone... planning, shopping, cooking, etc. How much energy is saved by letting the pros do the cooking? 4. Date - host the event on a different date. So many obvious benefits here, from 'needing to run back to the store', travel time/costs, coordinating schedules, and more. 5. Guest List - some people are toxic. We don't have to assume everyone is invited, especially if we want to claim the event is relaxing, fun, or enjoyable. What if we gave ourselves permission to allow "how it's always been" to get a little better?! Happier Thanksgiving!

Are you hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner this year? I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I have put on feasts (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and catered multiple events) that it's old hat to me. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thought I'd give you a few resources. I have attached my handy guide for sides you might prep before the big day and how long you can keep them in the fridge and re-heating instructions. And finally, here are just a few tips to help you navigate all the moving parts including incorporating your in-laws contributions when your fridge, stove and kitchen counter are PACKED (not gonna lie, I have a few ex in-law stories). 🦃 be specific in what you want people to bring and make sure you have the oven/fridge space to re-heat it -- if not, slow cookers come in super handy (rice cookers and Insta Pots are good too) 🦃 if you are roasting a turkey, that bird takes up most of your oven space, so it means sides have to be heated while the bird is resting/being carved reheating everything so it is hot on the table is the trickiest and most stressful part of the meal 🦃 pace yourself and try to delegate so you can have a bit of time: setting the table, peeling potatoes, making the pie filling, cutting the veg -- let go of as many tasks as you can 🦃 do not forget that the turkey needs to rest for 30 minutes BEFORE you carve so build that into your schedule 🦃 use a meat thermometer -- and take the guesswork of whether your bird is cooked or not -- insert it into the chubbiest part of the thigh without hitting the bone -- if it is 165 degrees F you are golden Have an amazing Thanksgiving and hope you are loving this Fall.
