I’ve been the one standing by the coffee machine, not knowing what the chit-chat was about…
Feeling a mixture of uncertainty and curiosity, with an urge to ask my colleagues to switch to a language I understood, but reluctant to be demanding…
I know firsthand the excitement, the anticipation, and the struggle of living and working in a new culture.
It’s what fuels my passion in the work I do with Expat Hero, supporting internationals and leaders of diverse teams enhance their intercultural relational competencies.
Although I’m back in my country of origin, in the culture I grew up in, I still find myself in situations, networks, or collaborations where the culture doesn’t foster diversity and inclusion.
The intention is there, but the blind spots remain undiscovered.
It’s not ill intent…that’s why they’re called blind spots.
However, when you’re on the receiving end of countless examples of unconscious exclusion, you either mobilize your fighting instinct or withdraw…or exhaust yourself with a mix of both 😥
But don’t…don’t do either…instead, pause…reflect…ask questions and voice your needs free of subtle judgment or accusations.
I’m not saying it’s easy.
I’m not saying it’s your responsibility.
I’m saying…when people around you are inconsiderate because they’re unaware, lend them a helping hand and let them know what you need to feel included.
If you or your team find yourselves tangled in cross-cultural misunderstandings and conflicts, maybe this approach can lead to a different conversation.
And if it’s still challenging, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to support you.
