What does it take to make a nonprofit financially viable? Can a nonprofit do it by running a "balanced budget" each year or might it need a surplus (profit) so it can build a healthy reserve fund? Can a nonprofit do it while paying its staff a fraction of market rates or might an investment in competitive compensation make it easier to attract and retain top talent (while minimizing the high costs of turnover)? At least -- they shouldn't in most cases. I see too many nonprofit leaders who use CPA interchangeably with bookkeeper or accountant. Some others understand the difference but think that a CPA is a must-have for a small nonprofit (under $5m). In my experience, such an organization only needs the CPA toolkit sporadically at most. Not that there's anything wrong with hiring a CPA for a small nonprofit, but they could end up overpaying for a lot of skill and knowledge that they're not using. That's especially true given the severe shortage of CPAs we have in this country. The organization may also pass up a candidate who actually better matches the organization's needs but just doesn't have those three letters after their name. Shall we reclaim the word "overhead"? Maybe treat it like it isn't a four-letter word? Successful nonprofits can only do their magic because of people working behind the scenes in administrative roles. They make sure that all the logistical details get covered so that the lights come on, to keep the organization in legal compliance, to have effective public communications, and so front line staff can depend on a steady paycheck. What would the world look like if private foundations couldn't exist in perpetuity? If they, perhaps, had to give away 10% or 20% of their wealth every year instead of just 5%? Would the gains, such as more funding available for causes we care about, offset any unintended side-effects (such as it becoming harder for those funders to attract and retain skilled program officers and other key professionals)?
