Many moons ago I was recruiting for an HR Manager. We needed an awesome HR Manager who was a strong HRBP, but could do lots of HR Ops and projects too. Ideally with a background in restaurants or retail. Ok so the list just got way smaller. Here's the kicker- we couldn't relocate anyone. Or at least, we didn't have the budget to relocate someone. Not even 5-10k to seal the deal. We interviewed like 50 people, including probably 10-15 onsite interviews over the course of 2-3 months. We easily spent more than 10k in employee time interviewing people, which we could have just used to cover relo for a great candidate. Not to mention the opportunity / turnover cost of not having some in that crucial role. In the end, we hired someone who was fantastic (Ashley) so all's well that ends well. If the search went on any longer, we might have even brought on an agency that would have charged us 30k to fill it. Companies can be penny wise and pound foolish sometimes when it comes to hiring 🙂
