Chances are you sooner or later find yourself in a situation where Business Rules need to evolve to continue to work for your businesses. However, as anyone who has ever worked through this will know, evolving Business Rules is much easier said than done. Mastery Of Dates Dates are one of the most important attributes in your data - they define the point-in-time for your data and most of your analytics are tied to them. Before you build your databases you need to define a clear strategy for the dates you will use and the formats for the dates. You also need to know the legal/financial requirements for the dates in your systems. If you have locations across multiple countries or even just multiple timezones, you need a clear definition for the reporting boundaries. If I have HQ on the East Coast, I will establish a cutoff of Midnight on 12/31, but what about my locations on the West Coast? Do I need to adjust the cutoff on the East Coast to 3am on 1/1. You need complete clarity for all these questions. There may be a scenario where you need to record both system time and local time in your transactions data (assuming that your servers are all aligned). The other challenge from data in multiple timezones is metrics. What may work at the local level may give misleading results if you roll it up (1pm on the East Coast is only 10am on the West Coast). You need to be very careful to design for this or not allow the user to report themself into trouble. So, start with a plan on how you will handle dates for each different scenario. Will I stick with local dates? Will I align with a single system date? And, have a clear plan for financial reporting - don't just assume, explain the different scenarios with the legal/financial management and seek concurrence. You do need a clear strategy for your database design. Once you turn on the pipe it could well be very difficult to go back and retrofit it for a different solution. #data #datadesign
