Have you ever looked for a business online before giving them your hard-earned money? I bet you have. Happy 2024, I wish you all serenity and calm in whatever storms come your way. Mental check: after the implosions of 2023, I do feel more empowered this time. Having deconstructed Search over the last year, this is the year we can put things back together. My industry has been facing the Google cash grab. We used to be able to target high-value short buying cycle search terms exclusively, and now, google is stuffing more searches into campaigns (think 100K more search terms). The negative strategy was hampered by the need to understand the meaning, value, and intent of all these extra searches, not just the ones we wanted - this is the root cause of our industry's problems. Frankly, we never had to do that before; we just needed to measure precisely and switch off what wasn't working and whoosh. Shares that only go up. Push that into SEO and we were golden. You know what? Questioning what we are measuring has been a good thing! We have to understand search intent, markets and buying decisions. We need to build better website experiences (always been my thing, now even more so). Keywords don't exist. They are a figment of imagination. It makes way more sense to look at visitors as part of an audience instead of individual keywords. The insights can be eye-opening. Finding out more about every.single.search also helps us solve the biggest problem in SEO - ambiguity. We can see the individual in context, anticipate their needs and serve visitors. We can personalise the crap out of everything. Multiniche. The company that builds software to handle these changes will help us win. They don't exist yet, so we continue manually for now. But at least we now have an actionable way to fix what broke.
