At #SEARCULAR we are implementing a circular economy for fisheries, but what is a #CircularEconomy? A circular economy moves away from a single use model for products and materials, by putting systems and solutions in place to make them last longer and be repurposed after use - therefore extending their life cycle in a loop. Food Security, Sustainability and Marine Polyculture. Having a poly-culture model uses less space with the ability to have more species together, therefore creating a smaller space to farm from and less manpower needed. It creates a broader sustainable market that creates more employment and transferable skills to the community. #Marine_Polyculture: Polyculture Systems can Reduce the Environmental Impacts from Aquaculture Systems. Nutrients released from cultured fish and shellfish-culture facilities can be effectively removed from the water by culturing plants such as seaweeds in close proximity to the animals. https://lnkd.in/gSPg_JWE

Bottom trawling is one of the most common forms of fishing but has been increasingly scrutinized for its destructive potential. Indeed, poorly-managed and excessive bottom trawl fishing can have significant impacts on the plants and animals living on the seafloor. However, well-managed bottom trawl fisheries are often sustainable. In the new review article (Bottom trawling sustainability), Max Mossler, Managing editor at Sustainable Fisheries at UW (Seattle), is comparing good vs. bad trawl management, and evaluates four main ways to assess the impact of bottom trawling (i.e., target catch, bycatch, habitat impact, and carbon emissions/climate change impact). Underpinning the entire article is the assertion that bottom trawling is food production—responsible for 26% of wild-caught seafood. Seaweed farmed using off-bottom aquaculture is rated green and is one of the most sustainable seafood items you can buy. Seaweed sequesters carbon, provides important marine habitat, and helps support biodiversity. Off-bottom aquaculture methods grow shellfish, seaweed, and more in ways that don’t harm the seafloor, and, overall, they have relatively few environmental impacts. For example, since these algae use sunlight and photosynthesis to nourish themselves, there’s no additional feed needed or nutrient waste discharged into the environment. Barnacle Foods sources seaweed in Southeast Alaska. Learn more about how they’re working to improve ocean health through sustainable aquaculture. #sustainableseafood #seaweed #supergreen #aquaculture #seafood

With over 50% of the world's seafood now sourced from aquaculture, this rapidly growing sector plays a pivotal role in global food security, supporting livelihoods, and alleviating pressure on wild fish stocks. However, as the industry expands, it also poses significant challenges to biodiversity, threatening marine ecosystems. To address these concerns, it is imperative for the aquaculture sector to transition towards sustainable practices. Our panel brings together experts to explore innovative solutions that not only minimize environmental impacts but also enhance productivity and resilience, paving the way for a more sustainable future for aquaculture and our oceans. 🎙️ Panelists: Alessandro Romano, Ittinsect - Feed for the Ocean Aly Rose, CREO Syndicate Christo du Plessis, Matorka Robin Millington, Planet Tracker Sven Kolstø, OptoScale Tune in at 2.45 PM, on March 20th (link to live stream available soon). #OceanInnovatorsPlatform #Aquaculture

Transparency. Without it, there's no sustainability. Yet the world's Regional Fisheries Management Organizations try to claim their catches are sustainable - without giving stakeholders equal access to their discussions, or to the facts about what's really going on. The Equal Access Principles aim to level that playing field. To give all stakeholders a seat at the table and visibility of the facts. They're a key step towards real sustainability. Learn more - and endorse the principles today ➡️ https://principles.fish/
