#GlobalOceansTreaty #OceansTreatyRatification American citizens, US residents, please ask your senators to support US ratification of the World Ocean Treaty. In September 2023 we accomplished an incredible feat: around 70 states signed the Global Ocean Treaty on the first day it was open for signature, including the United States!. Now once 60 countries have officially ratified the treaty, the Global Ocean Treaty will become international law. This will make it possible to intensify international action to reverse accelerated environmental degradation and mitigate the climate crisis through the creation of marine protected areas on the high seas and ensuring that activities in this important ocean area are properly assessed and managed. The United States can once again participate in this historic effort to protect the oceans. https://lnkd.in/dyEpPSHT

Trying to stop public funds rewarding energy companies burning forests in the name of climate action. At the intersection of forests, climate, energy, water and democracy.
New report on #climatechange risks for Europe from the European Environmental Agency has some rather clear messaging: "Most policies and actions to strengthen Europe's resilience to climate change are made for the long term, and some actions have long lead times. Urgent action is needed now to prevent rigid choices that are not fit for the future in a changing climate, such as in land-use planning and long-lived infrastructure. We must prevent locking ourselves into maladaptive pathways and avoid potentially catastrophic risks." But many conservative and extreme-right parties and politicians prefer to bet on anti-environmental messaging for the EU elections at the moment. Conservatives have been in power in the EU for about 4 decades... Is maintaining or gaining political dominance really worth lies endangering the future of all Europeans? https://lnkd.in/eZsub3QH

The EU strategic agenda 2024–2029 adopted yesterday represents a significant shift in the EU’s strategic narrative. The recalibration of the Green Deal towards pragmatism and competitiveness points to a broader tension between urgent climate action and immediate economic imperatives. This shift is reflective of a geopolitical climate where energy security and economic resilience take precedence. However, this pragmatism may dilute the EU's climate ambitions, potentially slowing the momentum necessary for substantial environmental progress. The alignment of climate policies with energy security goals could foster advancements in clean energy technologies, yet the emphasis on reducing bureaucratic burdens risks undermining rigorous sustainability standards. In this context, the role of Ursula von der Leyen and the political dynamics surrounding her re-election will be crucial. Her ability to navigate these competing priorities could determine whether the EU can harmonise its economic and environmental goals without compromising on either. This situation calls for vigilant advocacy to ensure that the Green Deal retains its transformative vision amidst these pragmatic adjustments. #EUGreenDeal #EUStrategicAgenda #ClimateAction

One of Stealth Power’s advisors, Landon Derentz, shared his thoughts on the importance of a Conservative Party climate strategy. Landon discusses the importance of the GOP “articulating a credible international climate strategy that embraces the energy transition in a manner that empowers U.S. economic growth and national security. Such a strategy is an opportunity to emphasize longstanding conservative policy!” Definitely worth the read! #sustainability #energytransition #climatepolicy
In a second Trump administration U.S. climate and clean energy policy will remain critical in fostering international partnerships that are essential to advancing long-standing elements of the Republican foreign policy and economic agenda. See my thoughts in The Hill here 👇

A new Op-Ed article by me and my colleague, Johan Munck af Rosenschöld, which positions the recently published European Climate Risk Assessment (where we were among lead authors) in context of the current political upheaval in Europe and growing geopolitical tensions globally. In this article, we argue against the EU’s current retreat from the climate agenda as part of a reconfiguration towards one narrowly defined by defense, security and border control. The EU Green Deal policy should not be pigeonholed as a "leftist-tree-hugging-environmental-activist" agenda or a green industrial strategy, as climate change is a material risk and a matter of high-politics for national security and civil protection. #Climatechange #Climateaction #EUgreendeal #EUelections #Climateadaptation #Climaterisk #Financialrisk #Nationalsecurity #Civilprotection #EUpolicy

Whatever the final outcome at the EU elections, 3 things to remember: 1. The level of voter support for EU environmental action has remained high since 2019 (83% => 84%). 2. Climate and environment is ranked 2nd-most important medium term issue, after security and defence. 3. Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent. Extreme weather event are becoming more frequent and intense. The European Environment Agency, in found that Europe is drastically unprepared for the impacts of climate change.
