No Patient is a Lost Cause🪴While some practitioners might label patients as "lost causes" after a few unsuccessful attempts, that's not a helpful approach to patient care. As dietitians, it’s our job to stay hopeful and persistent - and you never know what’s around the next corner. Besides, if you don’t keep the hope alive, then who will? This week, I had a breakthrough with a patient who’s been struggling with high phosphorus levels for months. We’d reviewed her diet and meds countless times with no change - until I tried something new. I asked her to take photos of her meals. She thought it was a bit silly, especially since her sister is the Instagram foodie. But she gave it a shot. When she returned, she said she’d only taken one photo, but there were actually three! Those photos revealed exactly why her phosphorus levels were high, and together we were able to brainstorm several simple, effective changes. The best part? These changes didn’t require a complete diet overhaul. So if you’re feeling stuck, remember: sometimes, a small shift in approach can open up a whole new world of possibilities. 💬 Have you ever faced a "lost cause" moment with a patient? Share how you turned it around! If you’re looking for simple strategies to prompt small shifts that can lead to big changes, check out my Easy Button Behavior Change Toolkit at https://lnkd.in/g54WVMxu. Why is it accepted to see patients become malnourished in front of our eyes? A stupid accident with my dad, a ladder, ice, and a light bulb ended in hospital admission, being put on a ventilator, and a jaw brace. This jaw brace, we heard, would most likely result in a 10% weight loss within 1-2 weeks. “10%???”, I thought, knowing that is the definition of severe malnutrition. The nurses said it as if this was a part of the treatment, and just wanted to prepare us for what to come. As a nutritionist, I knew measures could be taken, and I did not accept the status quo. Luckily, his room was on a floor higher than my office. And luckily, he was the most compliant patient I have ever met. With a jaw brace, and not being able to open his mouth more than a straw, he gained 5 kg while in the hospital. The staff had never experienced something like it. To this day, I am still flabbergasted when thinking about that episode. How the staff accepted that patients, no matter their nutritional status, would lose 10% of their weight in a week or two. The solution was so easy. In the same way, tech tools can be an easy solution for other issues in the healthcare system. Why is the status quo accepted, when changing status-quo can be life-saving?

The amount of people that come into my family owned health practice with diabetes is alarming. Almost every other patient is either pre-diabetic or full blown diabetic, even patients in their early 20s. A common theme with examining their lifestyle: 1. Highly processed food consumption on the daily. 2. Sedentary lifestyles from generation to generation. If you are reading this and can relate, diabetes does not have to be in your future! Steps to take: 👇 1. Get active 2. Strength train consistently 3. Check your blood levels regularly 4. Eat nutritiously dense Whole Foods with protein It is possible to reverse type 2 with intent & relentless consistency. Don’t let type 2 be the nail in your coffin. #Healthcare #Type2 #John5

Too often As medical practitioners, we get caught up in simply prescribing medications and forget about the real impact chronic diseases have on our patients' lives. Yesterday, a 35-year-old diabetic patient reminded me of the importance of a holistic approach to care. She had lost 8kgs and her A1c levels had dropped by 1.5% 3months ago my team had started her on a Personalized Care Program that included "push ups and salads" (as she likes to say) and she comes back looking radiant. It's crucial to recognize that patients need more than just medications. They crave for a more sustainable approach to LIFE itself! -Better nutrition with a plant-based diet, -Functional workouts, -Better sleeping habits. As doctors, we need to shift our approach and prioritize these more important prescriptions. Let's work towards a healthier future where our patients can thrive. #FunctionalMedicine #Healthcare #Wellness #remotepatientmonitoring #diabetescare #lifestylemedicine #longevity

Helping dietitians achieve high rates of client success by making behavior change easy | Kidney Dietitian | Behavior Change Expert | Dietitian Book Club Host
🤩 This week, a client’s unexpected win got me super excited! After months of struggling with high fluid gains—one of the hardest things about being on dialysis—she’s made some encouraging progress. When I asked her what changed, she told me her son started buying her water bottles and that’s all she’s been allowing herself to drink. Since she doesn’t like the taste of water, this clever strategy has helped her significantly decrease her fluid intake. 💧🚰 I’d never even considered this could be a strategy for her—or that she might not like the taste of water. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the best solutions come not from us but from our clients. 🙌 💬 What’s a client win that’s filled your cup with joy this week? Share in the comments! 💡✨ . . . . #ClientSuccess #InnovativeSolutions #FluidManagement #DietitianTips #HealthJourney #PatientCare #CreativeSolutions #HealthChallenges #ClientProgress #NutritionTips #KidneyNutrition
