One year ago, I took my first leap—literally. 🪂 Skydiving over Palm Jumeirah was my introduction to a journey that has profoundly shaped my perspective on leadership and growth. Since earning my USPA B License in April 2024, I’ve completed solo jumps that challenge me to trust myself, embrace uncertainty, and stay focused even in the face of fear. Skydiving has taught me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers or eliminating risk—it’s about preparation, decisiveness, and trusting the systems you’ve put in place. Just like stepping out of that plane, great leadership requires the courage to let go of what’s safe and embrace the thrill of the unknown. Each jump reminds me that growth happens when we push beyond comfort, face the freefall, and trust our ability to navigate through it. Leadership, like skydiving, is about taking those bold leaps that inspire others to do the same. The recent Superyacht LEADER Network Webinar underscored the critical role of leaders in shaping a positive onboard culture—arguably the most vital aspect of effective leadership. When participants were asked to define organisational culture, their responses highlighted common themes but varied in expression. Karl Santrian proposed this definition: "The values, beliefs, rituals, and attitudes that guide and influence leader and crew behaviour onboard." Tracey Santrian and Captain John Brining, however, found this phrase, offered by one of the participants, to better reflect their thoughts on the essence of onboard culture: "How leaders and crew behave when no one is watching." As leaders, please take a moment to reflect on the culture you are fostering onboard or ashore, whether consciously or not. Begin by clarifying what culture means to you and how your actions and values contribute to shaping it. Your influence is profound—embrace it to create a thriving environment for your team.
