A new exhibit is hopping up at the Aquarium! 🐸 FROGS: Facing a Changing World 🐸 Leap into the colorful, strange, and rapidly changing world of frogs at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Starting May 24, 2024, discover vibrant habitats featuring colorful tropical frogs from around the world; peek behind-the-scenes to watch staff care for frogs from eggs to adults; see a new exhibit space highlighting California and Baja frogs, their amphibian relatives, and reptile neighbors; and even paint your own virtual frog. Learn about the diversity of species and their unique adaptions, the threats they are facing, and how the Aquarium is helping to save them from extinction.

My father, David Packard, had a boundless curiosity about the world. When he turned that curiosity to the ocean, he brought a unique vision to the work of understanding the processes that sustain the largest living space on Earth. At MBARI, he teamed up talented scientists and engineers, with n extraordinary marine operations team, exceptional science communicators, and the myriad staff needed to keep the research institute functioning. Collectively, over nearly four decades, they have contributed so much to our knowledge of the living ocean. The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary has been approved by NOAA! The sanctuary designation will take effect after a review by the Governor of California and Congress. This review will begin on the publication date and continue for 45 days of continuous session in Congress. While this is a significant step forward, it’s just the beginning. Many details still need to be worked out as the Sanctuary moves closer to becoming a reality. Our work has focused on the science that identifies the diverse marine life inhabiting this vast ocean area. Using a cutting-edge technique called eDNA, well over 1,000 different species have been identified so far. To introduce this exciting technique, we created an immersive story titled eDNA: What is it? How is it collected? aimed at explaining how this innovative method works.

A humpback whale has completed one of the longest and most unusual migrations ever recorded, possibly due to climate change. Initially spotted off the coast of Colombia in 2017, the whale reappeared years later near Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean, covering at least 13,000 km. Experts suggest this extraordinary journey could be linked to climate change, which may have depleted food sources or driven the whale to seek a mate. Ekaterina Kalashnikova from the Tanzania Cetaceans Program called the migration "truly impressive and unusual," even for a species known for long migrations. The whale was photographed in 2022 near Zanzibar, likely marking the longest distance a humpback whale has ever traveled. Humpback whales are known for migrating between tropical breeding grounds and colder feeding areas, but this male's journey involved two distant breeding locations. One theory is that climate change has reduced the krill they feed on, forcing whales to travel farther for food. Another possibility is that whales are exploring new breeding grounds due to increased populations resulting from global conservation efforts. The whale, first photographed in 2013, was later identified in 2017 and again in 2022. The minimum great-circle distance between sightings is 13,046 km, though the actual distance may be greater.
