In supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, WAZA presented the WAZA Members' Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation, our commitment to strengthening the role of zoos and aquariums in global biodiversity conservation, at the CBD #COP16Colombia, currently underway in Cali, Colombia. The biodiversity crisis has never been as severe as it is today, with as many as two million species at risk of extinction, highlighting the need for urgent, decisive, and collective action. WAZA and the signatories of this declaration support Reverse the Red, promoting targeted species recovery actions and the establishment of civil society networks to enhance conservation efforts. Jennifer Talbot is one of the smartest conservation experts I have had the pleasure of working with, so it is unsurprising that in this piece, she shares some astute observations as to how to promote locally led development while simultaneously advancing #biodiversity conservation objectives.

As zoos and aquariums have expertise and a vast knowledge of species and their care, our community is ideally placed to participate and contribute to support conservation efforts aiming to reduce and reverse biodiversity loss. The Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) adopted in 2022, consists of four goals and 23 targets which call to action the ex situ community, providing both guidance and opportunities for organisations such as zoos and aquariums to quantify their contributions to biodiversity conservation. WAZA continually strives to align itself with the GBF, and encourages its members to do the same, both within the context of target 4 and other broader targets. Last month at the 2024 RedLAC Congress, keynote speaker Professor Dale Webber provided a roadmap titled, “The Path to 2030: Advancing Global Conservation Targets in National and Caribbean Regional Contexts”. The roadmap is an ambitious plan for Caribbean nations to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030 and outlines key steps from 2025 to 2030 to achieve this global conservation goal. The 30x30 goal is a subset of the Global Biodiversity Framework which is a landmark agreement aimed at addressing the biodiversity crisis by setting clear targets and guidelines for global conservation efforts that was adopted during the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in December 2022. With unique ecosystems and vulnerable coastal communities, the “30 x 30” goal holds profound significance for the Caribbean region especially. The theme of this year’s Congress is “30x30x30: The Path to 2030” and the addition of the third "30" underscores the urgency of action and the need for accelerated progress if we are to achieve these goals within the next 30 months. I've had concerns around biodiversity net gain, because of the 'net' and also the focus on habitat surveys, and not on species audits. This research (see link below) is important in providing evidence for a focus at species level if we really care about conserving biodiversity (also see previous shared post): 'Using the statutory biodiversity metric to define 10% biodiversity net gain without additional species-focused conservation management is likely to translate into small gains for plant biodiversity, and negligible gains for birds and butterflies.' Conservation actions are effective at reducing global biodiversity loss, according to a major study. International researchers spent 10 years looking at measures, from hatching Chinook salmon to eradication of invasive algae. The authors said their findings offered a "ray of light" for those working to protect threatened animals and plants.
