Wise words I’ve never forgotten from Nikki Lerner: STOP HUNTING THE PURPLE SQUIRREL! The unicorn/purple squirrel/perfect employee doesn’t exist. I just saw the same mid-career role posted for the third time. This position has been open for at least six months, maybe more. The same people in my network (including me!) have not only interviewed for this role multiple times… they have now been approached by recruiters for the same role. Again. You’re NOT going to find the purple squirrel. 🐿️ You’re NOT going to find the unicorn. 🦄 What you ARE going to do is miss or alienate dozens of qualified applicants who could be trained on your products, your clients, and your culture by now. Dozens of candidates who could be moving your business out of paralysis. If you’ve posted the job three times and interviewed dozens of candidates, and now your recruiter is reaching into the same pool of humans a second or even third time asking them to re-apply… you’re hunting for a purple squirrel with a horn on their forehead. Do better.

Cover Letter in 2024? 🚩 In the fast-paced, ever-evolving current job market, the focus has shifted from telling to showing. When examining #joblistings, it's important to be vigilant for certain #redflags that could indicate potential issues with the position or the employer like: -Vague Job Descriptions: If the listing is not clear about the role's responsibilities or requirements, it could signal undefined roles or unrealistic expectations. -High Turnove: Repeatedly hiring for the same position may indicate a high turnover rate, which can be a sign of a problematic work environment. -Overpromising: Be cautious of listings that promise excessive benefits or career growth without clear evidence or details. -Unrealistic Requirements: A long list of qualifications that seem excessive for the position level might suggest unrealistic expectations from the employer. -No Mention of Salary or Benefits: If the listing does not specify salary range or benefits, it may be a sign that the compensation is not competitive. -Poor Online Presence: A lack of professional online presence or negative reviews from employees can be indicative of company issues. -Rushed Hiring Process: If the employer is pushing for a quick hire without proper interviews or discussions, it could be a sign of desperation or disorganization. -Lack of Diversity: A homogeneous team or lack of commitment to diversity can be a red flag for a non-inclusive workplace culture. -Strict Salary Range: A non-negotiable salary range might indicate inflexibility and a lack of room for growth. It's always a good idea to do thorough research and ask direct questions during the interview process to ensure that the job is a good fit for you. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it might be worth investigating further or even walking away.

I have an attorney who has applied to three of my roles: one in healthcare, one in real estate, and one in commercial litigation. Spoiler alert: that attorney is not qualified for all three of these roles. Job hunting is daunting, time-consuming, and frustrating. I see why the shotgun approach is appealing. I'm officially a "Goal Hanger" and I love it... Here's the definition, Goal hanging is considered an unsportsmanlike tactic, and players who engage in it are often described as "bone-idle glory seekers" Here's the scenario, my candidate received an offer accepted, signed the contract and was due to start on Monday.... Deal done job done. We get communication from the client that things have changed in the business and the position is being pulled as well as the other candidate placed by another recruitment business. I find my candidate a further 2 positions but I also find out who the other poor candidate is, make contact, introduce myself and FSG. This new candidate for FSG has also 2 interviews with new clients, 🤞 for both of them. If you want to call me a "Goal Hanger" then please do, but my candidates whether new or old are my number one priority.
