We're very excited to announce that Kenneth Kellogg has been appointed our inaugural Artistic Ambassador! Kenneth will take over for Dr. Naomi André, who concludes her impactful five-year term as our Scholar in Residence at the end of this season. As Artistic Ambassador, Kenneth will serve as a representative of Seattle Opera in the community, engaging with audiences through our various events, as well as advising staff and board on season planning, racial equity initiatives, and community partnerships. Kenneth made his Seattle Opera debut in 2021 as the Commendatore in the filmed version of Don Giovanni, and later returned as The Father in Tazewell Thompson and Jeanine Tesori's contemporary opera Blue, a role that he describes as "a game-changer" for his life and career. In 2023 he took the stage as Fafner in this season's Das Rheingold, and most recently gave a triumphant performance as Malcolm X in X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X. Beyond his roles on stage, his passion for music and community shines through in his work. "Opera has the power to be a truly community-based art form," he says. "A place where people can see themselves represented in a larger-than-life space, feel comfortable, and feel welcomed. Making opera matter on that level, with every production we mount, will connect us to the humanity of our community." Please join us in congratulating Kenneth and welcoming him to this new role! https://lnkd.in/gA5W6q89

Experienced Chair / Director and Board Advisor to 21st century businesses and organisations ready to challenge the status quo and lead the way in a constantly changing world.
Friday Arts. #Springboardopera …reinvents opera experiences for all, in unexpected, inspiring ways whilst providing a platform through which emerging artists can advance their craft. Believing in the transformative value of music, we aim to unite performers and audiences alike in productions that benefit all involved. And how is that relevant in a business forum like LinkedIn? Weel, mainly because, when it is filtered down, Springboard is about innovation and changing the paradigm that is an arts business. If we are going to deliver on our mission, a new type of arts organisation is going to be needed. All the things that relate to a C21 business model apply, but especially things like engaging with stakeholders, transformational thinking, integrated end-to-end solutions, leadership and social licence. To support emerging artists, is there a better way than relying on Government for ongoing funding? Or is there a different way to think about sustainable funding? To bring opera to a wider range of audiences, we need to engage in different ways. Opera in unexpected, inspiring ways… in ways that connect to contemporary audiences in a VUCA world. Opera and the arts generally live an operate in the same VUCA world as, well, the rest of the world. So why should it be any different building a resilient and sustainable organisation in the arts space as opposed to in another business space? This is the other side of “reinventing opera experiences”. We cannot reinvent the opera experience without reinventing the arts organisation behind it. This is Springboard Opera … if you connect with these ideas, jump over to our website https://lnkd.in/gS53GYEN, and become a friend or get involved. #Future #TransformationalLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment #Directors #Technology #Performingarts #YourNetworkForLife Luisa Tarnawski Leslie Martin Gheorja Haidley

It's the 100 year anniversary of the iconic and legendary Maria Callas who transformed not only opera, but also culture and fashion.🎉 🌐The "Callas Phenomenon" Known for her captivating presence, Callas graced not only the opera stages but also the covers of mainstream magazines like Time, showcasing her appeal that went beyond the classical music audience. She was unique in engaging popular culture, rather than just sticking to the opera houses like her counterparts. 🎶The Artistry of Callas Her artistry set new standards in opera, influencing generations of musicians and redefining vocal performance. Musicians today, even those born after her passing, continue to draw inspiration from her work. Her vocal range was extraordinary, covering both dramatic soprano and bel canto roles with mastery. But Callas' performance capabilities were unmatched; she had an anointing to make the audience feel something. 🌹Beyond the Stage Unfortunately, Callas's personal life mirrored the drama of her roles, marked by glamorous highs and tragic lows. Her story resonates with the narratives of cultural icons like Marilyn Monroe, adding a layer of intrigue to her artistic persona. It's important to remember that - whether we like a celebrity or not - each person has a lot more complexity than meets the eye; it can be easy to criticize someone, but we don't have the whole picture - who knows what someone might be going through! 🎤Centennial Reflections One of our major themes in Living Opera (cc Soula Parassidis) is that these iconic singers - notably, Maria Callas - may not have been perfect (because, really, who is?), but they have made substantial contributions that we need to remember. And that memory should not fade after the centennial; we need to cherish it year after year because the lessons can guide us to live better and healthier lives. For those who want to learn more, below in the comments are links to two informative stories by Jay Nordlinger in National Review and Tom Huizenga in NPR that elaborate on her legacy. #MariaCallas #Culture #Fashion #Opera #Music #Art

Opera: Not everything is for everyone, but there must be something for everyone. In a climate of diminishing funding for the arts, never complain. Don’t feel insulted, even if you have been. Be inspired and inspiring. Be brave, proud, resilient, and humble. Tell your audiences you love them; they’re your best ambassadors. Say what you do and do what you say. Turn the vision of today into the reality of tomorrow. Be a pragmatic idealist. Finish what you’ve started. Never compromise on excellence. Adhere to your budgets. And above all: strive to change the way that people think about themselves and the world in which they live.

Springboard Opera, the coolest arts startup on the Brisbane scene, is ready to meet the world… An arts lunch at The Brisbane Club, Brisbane’s premier Business and Arts Club was our first foray into the world. At the Brisbane Club, the intersection of Arts and Business in the Rivercity. And as we all know, Brisvegas … the exploding arts heartland in Oz! It was really appropriate that the Brisbane Club was the venue. The guiding words for Springboard are Supporting emerging artists & Transforming the Opera Idea. Transforming the Opera Idea is about re-invention, innovation and all those other really cool C21 words that we talk about so much. And for Springboard, that means transforming the back end of the arts as much as the front end. And why would we try any other way? If we are serious about sustainability (which we are…) and credibility with all our stakeholders (ditto…), and properly supporting our amazing emerging Queensland Artists, well, the transformation needs to go right across the organisation. Or, in the case of Springboard, we have set ourselves up in the way we intend to continue. From the book-keeping to front-of-house, from the board to the volunteers at the workface, we are going to do it differently. There is not enough space here to tell the whole story. If you want to see us in action or get involved with something big, check out our events page. This is Springboard Opera … if you’re up for a 21st century adventure, up for creating something new, exciting and paradigm-busting to support young people, jump over to our website https://lnkd.in/gXgNVTGg, and get involved. Major artistic institutions have been facing financial headwinds, which were exacerbated in recent years. The solution must involve understanding audiences better and delivering value to them. 🌟 A sobering article in The Washington Post resurfaces these themes, motivated by large withdrawals by the Metropolitan Opera of its $306 million endowment resulting from its revenue shortfall. And it's not just them - many theaters around the world have been struggling to meet revenue targets. 🎭 But we would be wrong to conclude that these shortfalls are a lack of demand. True, attendance rates is down across many institutions (including the Metropolitan Opera), but is that a reflection of classical music or public arts administration? 🎶 Opera companies across the United States and beyond are forced to rethink their strategies, from the grandiose stages of the Metropolitan Opera to the innovative spaces of the Washington National Opera. "There isn’t going to be a magic bullet," acknowledges Timothy O'Leary of the Washington National Opera, highlighting the need for innovation and a generational shift in engagement with the art form. 🌐 We need to do more to understand audiences - what will inspire and engage people - and use technology to do that at greater scale and efficiency. Cutting costs may help, but broadening the audience is the key, and that is what we are committed to in Living Opera (cc Soula Parassidis). "For as much as opera companies can surgically cut and strategically innovate, audiences will have the biggest part to play to keep American opera from reaching its final act," said Michael Brodeur, the author of the WaPo article. Friday Arts. Here at Springboard Opera, we are about Supporting Emerging Artists. But we also hang our hat on innovation … as in Transforming the Opera Idea. And for us, the first step in Supporting Emerging Artists was, well… To ask them. What THEY need to get themselves started. We get that they are new graduates, putting their best foot out for the first step in a long career path. And they may not actually know what they practically need to get up and running. But then again, they might. They are part of the most educated and empowered generation ever. And they have the tools. So, as well as engaging with the knowledge and experience of those who have gone before, we are asking them, one of our big stakeholders. We may even ask our other big stakeholders, some of whom may not be singers. But they might help us to Support our amazing Emerging Artists and on the way, Transform the Opera Idea! Because this is the Springboard Way. This is Springboard Opera … if you’re up for a 21st century adventure, up for creating something new, exciting and paradigm-busting to support young people, jump over to our website https://lnkd.in/gXgNVTGg, and get involved.
