On Saturday our #TheCloseCommunity Conference, 'The Impact of Love on the Developing Brain', was held at the Radisson Blu in Glasgow. The day was inspirational, energising and emotionally provocative. The anticipation of our 3 speakers, Suzanne Zeedyk, Sarah Ockwell-Smith and Leslee Udwin was met with a captivating reality. We explored topics of #Attachment #CourageToLove #Childism #GenderViolence #Equality #ChildrensRights - I will share more in future posts. As part of my welcome message to the conference I shared the intention of creating The Close Community. Here is some of what I said: "In a world that often prioritises individualism and digital connections, our team at Tigers wanted to bring people together for an in-person event. Our aim was to create a space where people could connect, share stories, and foster relationships, reminiscent of the local cultures seen in many UK cities during the 1960s and 70s. During that era, "the old tenement closes” served as vital social hubs where residents came together, shared often limited resources, off loaded life’s challenges and built lasting friendships. These spaces were not just physical locations; they were symbols of solidarity and support, offering a sense of belonging that many of us yearn for today. By referencing the "closes" of the past, we aim to inspire a revival of those communal bonds, reminding us that we are stronger together. It’s a call to action to nurture the spaces where we can gather, share, and grow, ultimately creating a more connected and compassionate society. Through today’s event, we hope to spark conversations and relationships that will enrich our lives and help us navigate the complexities of modern existence with a sense of togetherness and belonging." After reading so many messages and social media posts about people's reflections of Saturday's conference, I think our intention of building a community of connection and support has been achieved. Now to turn reflections into action. Tigers Group #TheCloseCommunity

What if we treated our community like a team? Our community could be our neighbors, the parents of kids at the same school, our faith center, our family. And imagine if we could look at tht community through their strengths? Just because you don't work together, doesn't mean we don't create synergy. Just because we don't depend on one another doesn't mean we can't become interdependent. Let's build back our communities. Let's do it starting with #cliftonstrengths Let me know in the comments if you'd be interested in participating in a unique Strengths Team Building Workshop. I'll be setting up the details soon. The workshop would consist of looking at all participants through the lens of Strengths. You'll learn what each of the 34 talents means and explore ways to contribute to your own community. Once we can see the power of bringing people together - even those who don't know one another - imagine what we can do when we extend this to those closest to us. #teambuilding #communitydevelopment #inclusion #practicalstrengths Sam McDonald David Zúñiga Tamara Williams Van Horn Samir Gupte Cristen Colleen

Allyship is a year-round effort, so let's use this Pride month as an opportunity to check in. Here are some steps to becoming a better ally in your community: 🤍 Support and Amplify: Support and highlight the achievements of underrepresented individuals. Share their work and advocate for their ideas. 🎧 Listen and Learn: Listen without judgment and be curious about other people's stories. 📢 Speak Up: Use your platform to address injustices and call out discrimination. Silence can be complicit—let your voice be a tool for change. Allyship is a continuous journey. Some actions are easier than others, but each step brings us closer to a more inclusive workplace. #Allyship #Support #Community

For those of you who know my heart, you will know that I push limits in this space and don't just accept boundaries mindlessly. This is a conscious choice for me. It's the lens I have to see this area of health care. Those in this life that are living with dementia do not deserve to be locked up in a clinical world. I believe that we need to unlearn most of what we have learned about dementia. When I first spoke with Nicole, I was refreshed that someone shared my perspective. We can partner with residents and families to be pro risk and we can come alongside care partners to un-task their task-based world. There is an unmet emotional need that must be illuminated so that everyone can see - folks living with dementia don't need antipsychotics, they need someone to help them process their emotions. Dementia shuts down emotional processing centers in the brain, but the brain is still experiencing emotion! These folks need emotional regulation. We need all of our expertise. The emotional piece is my contribution. What's yours? I am thrilled to be a part of this movement #openthedoors. Consider joining us as we stand up for change. We can open the doors and we can make the spaces inside communities so amazing that no one wants to leave. Thanks Nicole Smith! #culturechange #dementiacare #OTD2030 #humanrights #culturetransformation

"We really need all kinds of advocates, allies, professionals, everyday people, citizens, to be involved in building inclusive, accessible communities...if we are all really striving for meaningful inclusion, and belonging in people with disabilities, there are many perspectives that can advance that." says Kelly Nye-Lengerman in the latest BoggsCast.
