The UK Government has awarded funding to a consortium led by Morek Engineering to design a new class of low-carbon installation vessel for the floating offshore wind market. The consortium has won the funding through the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition based on their proven track record in innovative vessel design and delivery of complex offshore operations. The consortium includes Morek Engineering, Solis Marine Engineering, Tope Ocean, First Marine Solutions, and Celtic Sea Power. This project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. CMDC4 is part of the Department’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, a £206m initiative focused on developing the technology necessary to decarbonise the UK domestic maritime sector. For offshore access specialist Ampelmann, Enersea has designed an innovative walk-to-work system: the W-type. The W-type is an electric gangway system developed for the Service Operation Vessel (SOV) market to efficiently transfer personnel and cargo at various heights. Enersea has been involved in previous designs of Ampelmann systems such as the A-type and L-type, which were not tower based systems. For the W-type, Ampelmann asked Enersea to design a new type of access system consisting of an integrated tower and gangway. In close co-operation with the Ampelmann engineering department the design process has evolved into an innovation in the offshore market. Several new features have been incorporated in the design. The gangway can convert into a fully functional crane with a lifting capacity of 2 tonnes. Further, with its 1.2m width, the gangway is wide enough to transfer trolleys of up to 750kg. Especially for the offshore wind market this is convenient as servicing individual turbines requires a substantial amount of equipment and tools. These can now easily be rolled to the transition piece or working platform of the wind turbine foundation. French family-owned shipowner Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has revealed a new offshore wind service operation vessel (SOV) capable of running on liquid hydrogen, Offshore Energy informed.   The liquid-hydrogen SOV, currently in the concept design phase, will be able to operate 95% of the time with zero carbon emission, with the vessel only releasing water during standard operations, said the company.   This would have a positive impact on offshore wind farm operations-related emissions by preventing the release of about 4,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, according to LDA.   LDA developed the concept design together with the Norwegian naval architecture company Salt Ship Design and in relation with key stakeholders including main equipment suppliers, class and flag authorities, and fuel providers, with support from the European Commission.   The vessel is designed for up to 90 technicians onboard, together with 14 days of endurance at sea without requiring additional offshore facility or heavy port infrastructure.   “We believe that H2 as fuel is one of the key enablers for reducing the impact of shipping industry in the coming years and help reaching the challenging carbon emission targets for the whole industry,” according to LDA.

In addition to helping to improve the performance of wind or ocean energy structures we also apply our technology and expertise to the Service Operation Vessels (SOV), Crew Transfer Vessels, (CTV) and other work boats that are required to operate offshore, sometimes in hazardous weather and extreme sea states. At Cape Horn Engineering we have developed statistical models to characterise a vessels motion in response to an irregular sea state, allowing long term operability analysis of a vessel operating in a particular location. We can assist in significantly improving safety, comfort and workability for wind farm technicians, even in the roughest sea conditions. CFD Anaylsis: Cape Horn Engineering proudly worked with Naiad Dynamics, ship motion control experts, on the CFD design optimisation for the stabilisation fins to improve the longitudinal stability of the Service Operation Vessel (SOV). SWATH vessels are known for their inherent low longitudinal stability. They have the tendency of trimming bow down at maximum speed. To overcome this issue, the vessel was fitted with Naiad Dynamics’s stabilisation system – a pair of stabiliser fins mounted on the inner sides of both hulls, a short distance aft of the bow thrusters. The effects of the tunnels on the flow into the fins and thus the ability of them to perform properly and efficiently were a cause for concern. CFD performance analysis were run for the whole vessel, including the rudders and fins, with the aim to achieve a better understanding of the correlation between rotating the fins, and regulating the SWATH’s trim. The analysis was performed over the range of operating speeds. There were two main questions to be answered during the analysis of the SWATH; Firstly, are the installed fins capable of maintaining level trim while sailing at maximum speed, Secondly, which angle attacks give neutral lift for a range of boat speeds. Experimental project underway in preparation for Italy’s subsea power cable connection

Yesterday was the close-out presentation of Project BOEI, a techno-economic feasibility study on behalf of the Province of South-Holland on the electrification of tankers at the Scheveningen anchorage. The goal was to identify the most feasible technical solutions and risks, in addition to cost and emissions reduction estimation. Primary drivers for electrification are reduction of NOx and CO2 emissions. This video provides a closing summary of the project, including final results on costs and benefits as well as showcasing the free-to-use interactive tool for customization of similar type projects, i.e. offshore charging of ships. In this video you will learn that: 1) Electrification of a tanker at Scheveningen anchorage is technically and economically feasible. Total costs for all scopes combined is €14M (~€12M for infra and ~€2M for ship). E-anchor and subsea cabling are approximately 50% of all cost. 2) The potential NOx reduction is much higher than initially anticipated. It is estimated at well above 800,000 kg per year for all vessels, equalling ~7.5 mol NOx deposition per ha per year. 3) Break-even price parity for shipowner and provider of power is at around €0.20-€0.25 per kWh. A feasible business case can be obtained with Renewable Energy Units only, or ~€3M subsidy.
