DeepSeek’s rise marks a turning point in AI—where innovation beats big budgets ! The rise of DeepSeek underscores a transformative shift in the AI landscape. It highlights that innovation and success are increasingly driven by vision, determination, and resourcefulness rather than access to massive capital. This aligns with the broader trend of democratizing AI, where advancements in tools, frameworks, and open-source contributions are lowering barriers to entry. With techniques like transfer learning, model distillation, and more efficient architectures, smaller teams can now build and fine-tune powerful models. This democratization empowers startups and individual researchers to compete with established players, fostering a more dynamic and innovative ecosystem. Open-source frameworks, pre-trained models, and cloud-based resources are making it easier than ever to experiment and deploy AI solutions. This trend will likely accelerate, enabling even more groundbreaking applications across industries. 🚀 Are we entering an era where agility and innovation matter more than sheer compute power? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Cracks in the AI oligopoly are starting to form.... For a while now, many, including myself, have been calling for a shift in focus in the AI space. Instead of the relentless pursuit of “bigger is better” with ever-larger models consuming exponential resources, the industry desperately needs to prioritize efficiency and layering services on top of these models. Well, that oversight just came back to bite us. The release of Deepspeek R1, which matches frontier models at a fraction of the cost, has exposed the fragility of the “scale-first” mindset. Suddenly, the oligopoly of big AI labs doesn’t look as invincible as it once did. Those hefty VC investments pouring into bigger models? They’re starting to look… questionable. But here’s the opportunity in all of this: 1. Focus on efficiency – Let’s reimagine architectures to deliver performance without the absurd hardware or energy costs. Efficiency isn’t just a “nice-to-have”; it’s the path to unlocking sustainable growth and accessibility for more use cases. 2. Build services, not just models – The real value comes from solving practical problems with AI. Services that empower industries, augment human workflows, and make AI approachable and actionable will define the next phase of innovation. The cracks in the old “bigger at all costs” mentality are showing. A $500 billion Stargate plan now leads questions to is this a justifiable investment to build more and bigger. Now we watch and see, are the big US AI firms too big to pivot or are we going to see a new wave of innovation come flying at us. #ai #scale #energy

With generative AI commoditizing so much value, how can AI startups capture their intellectual property? Process or method patents could be one answer, based on what Casey Flint of Square Peg says after her 1,000 conversations about AI: 1. If 90% of what’s exciting about what you’re offering is actually the underlying model’s capabilities, then you’re going to struggle to differentiate 2. Startups should (instead) be building on top of that & “maybe you build a whole bunch of really interesting workflows, that work with what your customer really needs”. The key word here is ‘workflows', some of which will translate to method or process patents. And startups will be able to use their patents in valuation, cap raising, defence against patent aggressors and licensing. Programs like Ric Richardson's Office for Innovation (OFI) exist to help Australian inventors get to this patent stage quickly. https://lnkd.in/g2j2EqhG
