Where #climate minds meet
◎The Drop Conference’s core message. Created by Pale blue dot, and the Domino Studio, with the statement to be a catalyst for meaningful change and a driving force towards a sustainable future. Arranged for the third year and I had the opportunity to join over 1200 climate people.
☞ The main conference day had four keynotes – these to “bend our minds”. Enjoyed the eye-opening talk “Trust in the Digital Age” by Kyla Scanlon, with insights from her recent book “In this Economy? How Money & Markets Really Work”. Later, Chido Govera, shared her remarkable story where her strong determination to empower people is the cornerstone for her creation of The Future of Hope Foundation. I urge everyone to study the foundation’s website - to be inspired, and to support.
☞ The special setup of the conference had 48 roundtables, “ripples”, covering a range of topics, run for, and by, climate community engaged people. Not only that the ripples had interesting topics, you had plenty of time for engaging discussions. I enjoyed this setup tremendously and don’t think I ever gained so many insights during an event, ever.
1️⃣ My first ripple session was “#Biodiversity - The Final Frontier in #Sustainability”: discussion around the time horizon and complexity for biodiversity credits. Work is ongoing and the EU has launched a study targeted to be shared around UN Biodiversity COP16 Colombia. And as Ursula van der Leyden stated at the recent DLD Conference, “there’s a clear economic case for preserving and restoring nature”.
2️⃣ Next ripple was “Collaborating with Corporates - How to Establish Mutually Beneficial Partnerships” with some simple, yet important, messages to startups. Among those, the importance of having more than one “champion” within the corporate. Then, as one corporate rep’ hinted, if the startup has a solution that the corporate's end customers are willing to pay for, and at the same time supports the corporates ‘net zero’ journey, this will be of very high interest 😉.
3️⃣ Last session was “Diving into Water - Looking Beyond Carbon and Biodiversity” - a quite unnoticed area and only 1% of impact investments are into #watertech. However, some of the global tech giants have made pledges to become water neutral, or water positive, by 2030. These pledges often involve a combination of reducing direct water usage, improving water efficiency in operations, and investing in water restoration projects in water-stressed areas.
💚 Finally, and most important of all, is the interaction with so many inspiring people. Just as an example, at the end of the day, I shared a table with Ernst van Orsouw, building a startup based on stem cell research for cultivating meat, with Lena Sophia Voß, researching on solutions for the future e-mobility, and with Peter Cullom, an experienced investor nowadays doing ‘moonshot’ investments (the latest within fusion power…). Amazing people.
